A gunman opened fire at Fort Lauderdale Airport leaving at least five people dead and eight injured.

“There is an ongoing incident in Terminal 2, Baggage Claim,” the airport said on its Twitter feed.

The shooting took place in Terminal 2 at in the baggage claim area at around 1 p.m. local time.

“Confirmed: Shooting at Fort Lauderdale -Hollywood International Airport with multiple people dead. One subject in custody,” said the Broward Sheriff’s Office on Twitter.

“The thoughts and prayers of the entire Delta family are with the people of Fort Lauderdale and Broward County, and those involved in the tragic events today,” said Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian.

Delta operates primarily out of Terminal 2 of the airport.

The airport said all flights were temporarily suspended and the Federal Aviation Administration put a ground stop into effect at the airport immediately after the shooting was reported.

Authorities have not yet released the name of the shooter.

The airport remains closed as of 5:15 p.m. EST.
