(I say realistic because almost every parent has had to allay their children's bedtime fears at one time or another!) Once the app is launched, you can choose among several activity options. You may want to check your Settings first to get the best possible experience in personalization. If you'd like, you can even watch a brief video demonstrating the book's features. Now you're ready to begin!
You'll see Caillou in bed shining his flashlight, trying to be brave! Tap either the Listen, Read & Talk or Theater big buttons. Once you tap Listen, the professional narrator will begin reading the story. Animated circles will briefly flicker on all the items that come to life. See Mommy kiss Caillou, and hear him giggle in response. My favorite animated trick is watching and hearing the light click off when touched. You can also turn on Caillou's flashlight by touching it! Tap the arrow to move to each page of this sweetly tender book, or touch the "+" button at the end of the screen to move to any favorite, numbered page (or frame) of the story.
Feel and see the calming effects of Mommy as she comes in to reassure Caillou who is afraid of monsters (which are only shadows in his room). Tap the bold printed Living Word "shadows" to see this animation appear. Throughout the story, children will come to recognize Living Words in bold print which react to their touch and may even be recorded in their voices! The toys in the chest and drawers come to life when you tap these beautifully drawn, primary color objects. All ends well when Caillou's parents come to his room to show that there are no monsters, and that he is only hearing the sounds of nature outside. Caillou is finally able to sleep peacefully with Teddy.
In the Read and Talk section, use Avatars to personalize both yourself and your child. Even more exciting is the opportunity to prepare recordings. Just tap and hold a Living Word to make your own recordings of the words: Mommy, Daddy, Caillou, Shadows, Cat and all the other ones in bold font! In the Living Theater, tap on items in the scrolling boxes to add them to the scene above. You are now making your own colorful and imaginative Caillou theater! Hear sound effects and see animations while making new scenes over and over again!
