Inspired by her experiences as a resident choreographer in healthcare settings across the greater DC region, the work combines the excitement of performance with the satisfaction of meaningful discussion and creative involvement. Weaving together compelling scenes from literature and graphic novels with the daily frustrations and long-range aspirations of healthcare professionals, Medicine by the Book reveals the power of our creative minds to heal our ailing bodies. Designed as a focal point for discourse and creativity, Medicine combines theater, storytelling and movement followed by a facilitated audience-and-cast 'lab' session to immediately propel the work further." This preview performance will feature faculty members from University of Maryland’s School of Public Health.

Painting the Line, drawing the paint - Oil Paintings by Ann Schlesinger at the Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall at NoVa Community College

In celebration of its 15th anniversary, the Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall & Arts Center, Forum and Passageway Galleries at Northern Virginia Community College’s Alexandria Campus will feature the one-person exhibit Painting the Line, drawing the pain: Oil Paintings by Ann Schlesinger, daughter of Jim and Rachel Schlesinger.  “My work is driven by the back-and-forth interplay between what I actually see and how it translates abstractly on a two-dimensional surface,” Schlesinger said. “I push paint around the canvas, seeing what happens when I move objects and alter my view. I play around with color, space and light, and constantly make changes from the original impetus of the painting and always, abstraction, the trump card, triumphs." Gallery hours are Monday-Friday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and during performances.
