Note: Talk is free but if you want to tour the museum before or after, *regular admission applies. Bite-size lunchtime talks are offered most Wednesdays throughout the special exhibition, Picturing Mary: Woman, Mother, Idea. Museum staff members facilitate interactive talks that encourage close looking and the investigation of mediums, techniques, or overarching themes of the exhibition. This week, Digital Media Specialist Laura Hoffman discusses the variety and significance of the physical media artists have employed to depict spiritual subject matter. *Regular admission: $10, students with ID and 65+ $8, Free for NMWA members and youth 18 and under + Free Community Day on the first Sunday of every month 12:00pm - 5:00pm (that's this Sunday, March 1!)

Historian David O. Stewart restores James Madison to his proper place as the most significant framer of the new nation. Neither soldier nor orator, low on charisma and high on intelligence, Madison cared more about achieving results than taking the credit. Between the 18th and mid-20th centuries, countless African Americans passed as white, leaving behind families and friends, roots and community. Historian Allyson Hobbs explores the possibilities and challenges that racial indeterminacy presented to men and women living in a country obsessed with racial distinctions. Kathryn Jacob, Curator of Manuscripts, Schlesinger Library, Harvard University talks about the library’s current exhibition What They Wrote, What They Saved: The Personal Civil War. The exhibition features diaries, letters, and first-hand accounts from men and women affected by the strife and conditions of that period. These stories complement ACM’s new exhibition, How the Civil War Changed Washington (February 2, 2015 – November 15, 2015) in which the personal stories of several Washingtonians living in the nation’s capitol during the war are featured.

Opening for Thirty Years of Discoveries Paintings, Calligraphy and Ceramics by Stephen Addiss

Stephen Addiss is a painter, poet, ceramicist, musician, and Japanese art historian. Addiss was a professor for thirty-six years, retiring in 2013 from a distinguished position at the University of Richmond. He began studying calligraphy and ink painting in 1969 with Asian scholars, later studying in Japan and Taiwan. This exhibition features over thirty years of ink paintings, calligraphy and ceramics.

Luis Inácio (Lula) da Silva rose from poverty to become one of Brazils most popular presidents. João Moreira Salles had access to Lula during the 2002 campaign and fills his film with behind-the- scenes footage, foregrounding the "intermissions" between big public events.
