Howard Hoffman Distinguished Lecture at GWU: Solution Pitching

Dan Gordon, Technology Partner at Valhalla Partners, a Tysons, VA-based venture capital firm investing in next-generation infrastructure and digital media, will discuss an approach to better presentations he calls "Solution Pitching."  A reception with complimentary food and beverage will take place in the common area outside of Duques 651, followed by a brief lecture from Mr. Gordon, and finishing with Q&A from the audience. Dan Gordon has over thirty years of experience working with technology, as a computer scientist, software developer, manager, analyst, and entrepreneur. He has a B.A cum laude from Harvard University and an M.S. degree from NYU in Computer Science. He is a Professional Member of the IEEE and ACM.  He lives in DC with his wife and two children.

In this two-hour workshop and Q&A, you'll learn some of the secrets of strong writing and how to get published using what you already know, even if you don’t have any writing experience, yet. Dana Sachs is a former journalist and the acclaimed author of several books of fiction and nonfiction, including The House on Dream Street: Memoir of an American Woman in Vietnam and The Secret of the Nightingale Palace. Tiffany Hawk is the author of the novel Love Me Anyway and a travel writer whose stories can be seen in such publications as The New York Times, National Geographic Traveler and on NPR’s “All Things Considered.”

Candlelight Vigil Honoring Matthew Shepard and National Coming Out Day

RSVP requested so they know how many people to expectOn October 11, 2013, following a performance of The Laramie Project, Ford’s Theatre will host a candlelight vigil outside of the theatre in honor of Matthew Shepard and  National Coming Out Day. This vigil will take place despite the government shutdown, as we will be outside on the sidewalk by Ford's Theatre. Matthew’s father, Dennis Shepard, will make remarks. Rev. Dwayne Johnson of Metropolitan Community Church of Washington will lead an interfaith moment of silence. Members of the Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington, directed by Dr. Thea Kano, will sing.
Back Story for those who may not know it: In October 1998, Matthew Shepard, a gay college student living in Laramie, Wyoming, was abducted, tied to a fence, beaten and left to die on the outskirts of town by two assailants. He died shortly after midnight on October 12, 1998, with his family by his side. His murder claimed national and international attention and has become one of the most widely known anti-gay hate crimes in American history.

Just in time for back to school, ITVS Community Cinema kicks off its 2013 - 2014 season with Bernardo Ruiz's "The Graduates." This Busboys and Poets event will feature episode 2, the "Boys" hour of the 2-part special followed by a Q&A (speakers are TBA).  This episode profiles three young Latinos who have overcome enormous challenges, through the help of family, friends and community organizations, en route to completing their education:Episode 1 or the "Girls" hour (part of ITVS's Women and Girls Lead initiative) will be screened at Community Cinema events at the Washington DCJCC on October 20th and Hill Center on October 22nd.

In association with the School of International Service of the American University (Washington, DC), a second series of debates will take place at the university campus starting in October 2013. Each debate will feature speakers from both sides of the Atlantic, and institutions such as Brookings, the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), etc.  The first discussion on October 14th, will focus on the 2008 Financial Crisis.
