It is very difficult to make money as a filmmaker. Making a movie can be very expensive and making money from the finished movie is even harder. If you want to make movies because you want to make a lot of money, you are in for a lot of disappointment. You might as well play the lottery which probably has about the same odds.
That’s why it is difficult to get people to invest in movie projects because there are very poor returns. It’s better to play the stock market.
So why do people make movies?
Because they love filmmaking and they have a passion for it. They have a story they are burning to tell or a cause they want to champion.
You need to have this passion and love for movies to be a success.
And by success, I don’t mean rich and famous.
By success, I am talking about that feeling that you made something good that you can be proud of.
Or the feeling of success that you helped a cause you care deeply about. I believe this is the passion that drives new filmmakers, not the desire for fame or fortune. There are easier ways to make money.
