The 2017 Honus Bonus Baseball Card Game may be a new kid on the hobby*block, but the company is led by someone with close ties to another part of the hobby.
Headed by Steve Charendoff of Rittenhouse Archives, the product looks to combine elements of traditional baseball cards, modern inserts and fantasy baseball. In a nutshell, cards can be purchased in packs and boxes like most every hobby product. But those cards can be used to play an online fantasy baseball game with cash prizes ranging from $100 all the way up to $5,000.
The first series 2017 Honus Bonus Baseball cards features a 500-card base set, making it one of the larger products of the year. Each card has a unique scratch-off code, which code pose as a collecting dilemma to some. On the one hand, if you want to use the cards as intended, they must be scratched. Those simply collecting the cards may want to keep the cards in their original condition and not scratch them.
For those playing the fantasy game, codes can be entered in monthly and season-long competitions through the Honus Bonus website. Entering is free other than the cost of the cards. However, each code can only be used once.
Fantasy team require 30 players: 13 pitchers, two of each of the infield positions, six outfielders, and a designated hitter. The DH spot can be filled by any batter. Scoring is based on a variety of traditional stats.
In addition to the base cards, 2017 Honus Bonus Baseball has a few inserts. Silver Foil parallels land one per pack. The only other parallels are Printing Plates but these aren’t in packs. Rather, they’re an incentive. For every case ordered, dealers get a set of four plates used to make a single card.
Career Milestones are all one-of-one cards. And while each card is unique, there are a lot of them. Featured players have a stat that’s highlighted such as home runs, wins or runs batted in. Each home run, each win, etc. is highlighted on its own card. That means Dansby Swanson has three different one-of-one Career Milestones cards for his home runs. Clayton Kershaw has one for each of his 126 wins. Ichiro has one for all 3,030 of his hits so far. It’s reminiscent of the Topps Moments and Milestones releases from 2007 and 2008.
Every box of 2017 Honus Bonus Baseball has a pair of Career Milestones cards. Collectors can also take advantage of a mail-in offer for a third. For every 24 wrappers sent in, another Career Milestones card is sent.
Sketch cards with original artwork are also randomly inserted. Charles Hall, Mick and Matt Glebe, and Brad Utterstrom are among the artists contributing to the product.
“As a lifelong baseball card collector and long-time fantasy game player, it made perfect sense to combine these two overlapping passions in this unique series of cards,” said Charendoff in a press release.
Charendoff will continue with Rittenhouse as well, which focuses primarily on entertainment. The company’s current licenses include*Star Trek,*James Bond and*Game of Thrones. Rittenhouse does have experience with sports cards with such niche licenses as the WNBA, racing and even professional bowling.
2017 Honus Bonus Fantasy Baseball packs carry a suggested retail price of $3.99.
