Louisiana State University (LSU) revealed that the university is looking for a contractor to cultivate medical cannabis at a facility outside of the campus.

Last May Louisiana became the 25th state to legalize medical cannabis when the government expanded their medical cannabis program to allow patients access to the plant. Along with expanding the list of qualifying conditions for cannabis, the initiative also permitted two schools, LSU and Southern University, to grow Louisiana’s initial cannabis crop.

Based on this week’s statement, it appears that LSU is ready to begin their cannabis operation. The contractor they are looking to hire will be responsible not only for growing the plants, but also for overseeing the construction of the cannabis facility. The contractor will be responsible for the $10 million necessary to get the project up and running, and according to LSU Professor Dr. Ted Gautheir, the applicants have been plentiful .

“We’ve had quite of bit of interest from a variety of people both in state and out of state,” Gautheir, said.

When LSU makes their decision, the first steps will be to secure an off-campus location for the facility that will then become part of the university’s property. Although the facility will be hosted by the school, students and faculty members will not be taking part in the project.

“There will need to be a perimeter fence, for example there will be surveillance cameras both inside and outside the facility. There will be restricted access even within the facility and restricted access even from room to room,” Gauthier said.

The facility will be subject to a number of security measures outlined in last year’s initiative. Most importantly the location of the new building will not be disclosed to the public, all they are being told is that it is being built in East Baton Rouge Parish.
