Talkatone stands out from other free calling apps like Skype, FaceTime and Viber, because Talkatone lets you make free calls to anyone even if they don’t have the app installed. Talkatone also lets you send free SMS to anyone anywhere even if they don’t have the app installed.
If you use Talkatone you can stop paying for text messages, cell minutes and landline calls. You can also turn your iPad or your iPod into phones along with your Kindle Fire. Talkatone works in areas with bad cell coverage. Turn it on to make calls and send texts.
If you are traveling, use Talkatone and forget about international roaming and call charges.
Talkatone is available for Android and iPhone. When you open the app for the first time you can either log in using your Facebook account or Google account. Once logged in, the app automatically gets access to your contact list on Google or Facebook and syncs them to the address book on your phone. After this is done you can begin making free calls.
Talkatone can receive calls from any regular phone number in the US and Canada. To make calls you need to have both Google Voice and Google Talk set up because the app relies heavily on Gmail’s call forwarding function. To make a call, log into your Gmail account, go through your contacts, select the one you want to call, and hit the “Call Phone” button at the lower left of the screen.
The downsides of Talkatone are it can only be used to contact your friends on Facebook or your contact list on Google. It’s one or the other and not both. You also have to activate your Google Voice account to use Talkatone. Lastly, the app is only available for users in Canada and US. And calls can only be made to Android and Google users within these two countries.
