The 2012-2013 annual enrollment period for the Florida Prepaid College Plan has begun. This college plan allows parents to prepay higher education costs at a set price for newborn children and older. Mandee Heller Adler, a noted independent Miami college advisorand founder of International College Counselors, recommends that Florida parents or grandparents enroll, or seriously consider enrolling, if they have not done so already.

Currently, families can select one of four Prepaid Plans. The plans will cover the cost of tuition and most mandatory fees at Florida’s 12 state universities and 28 colleges.

The deadline for this enrollment season is January 31, 2013.

“Parents or guardians who enroll their child in the Florida Prepaid College Plan will in time pay less for college. If they wait to pay when their student is ready for college, the families will be paying more. Think of the Plan as an insurance policy against rising college costs,” said Mandee Heller Adler

The value of the plan may be transferred to any eligible educational institution if the student decides to attend an out-of-state university, technical school or a private college in Florida. If the student decides not to go to college, the plan may be transferred to another family member. The plan can also be cancelled with families receiving full refunds at any time. The student has 10 years from the projected college enrollment date to use the plan benefits, not including time spent serving in the military.

“If you plan to enroll your child at some point, do it now. Don’t wait until next year. Each year for the past six years, the costs have been going up,” said Adler.

The Florida Prepaid College Plan is financially guaranteed by the State of Florida and protects the buyer from tuition inflation, explained college consultants at International College Counselors. To qualify for a plan, the child or the child’s parent/guardian must be a Florida resident.

According to WJHG News Channel 7, Florida families have purchased more than 1.5 million Florida Prepaid College Plans since 1988. Approximately one in ten children in the state has a Florida Prepaid College Plan.
