This month’s lineup features:

Aura Maru comes from the Republic of Moldova, where she has recently published a book of poetry in her native Romanian, entitled du-te free. A number of her poems in Romanian have been translated into German, Swedish, Dutch and French. Currently a PhD student in Comparative Literature at UC Berkeley, she is focusing on her poetry projects in the English language.

Maria Nieto is a professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at California State University, East Bay where she has been involved in underrepresented minority recruitment, teaching, and research for over 26 years. Maria’s research interests and science publications span from cancer cell detection and destruction to the subject of sex and gender where she has written popular press articles and an amicus brief that was submitted to the Supreme Court of the United States in support of marriage equality.

Maria’s first work of fiction, a murder-mystery/crime-drama entitled Pig Behind The Bear, has won four awards to date. Maria’s second novel, The Water of Life Remains in the Dead, was recently ranked #5 on the Latino Author’s top ten list for 2015. Both novels feature a feisty Chicana who uses her Revlon lipstick like a talisman as she works to investigate crimes against the most vulnerable among us – immigrants and children. Maria’s writing uses history, science, and dark humor to force us to see the unseen; the victims we never knew, those killed under the cover of nightfall.

Tomás Riley is a Chicano artist and activist born in Oakland, CA and raised in the Southeast San Diego neighborhood of Emerald Hills. His work has been published in several anthologies including Bum Rush the Page: A Def Poetry Jam (Three Rivers Press, 2001). His first book, Mahcic, was published by Calaca Press (2005), and his recently released chapbook Post Chicano Stress Disorder (2011) helped launch his latest literary effort: the independent imprint Tinta Vox Books.
