Skillful communication and compassionate exchange as an expression of our intrinsic sanity. This day-and-a-half program introduces you to Contemplative Psychology and Karuna Training. It is a stand-alone class, with no prerequisites. If you’d like a taste of meditation and Buddhist wisdom, and to learn about the background and experiential methods of contemplative psychology, this class is for you.

After the introduction, if you wish to continue studying and practicing, you can sign-up for the two year course that will begin in October of 2016 in Berkeley, CA.

Karuna Training is a comprehensive training in Contemplative Psychology that teaches us how to heal ourselves and work skillfully with others through the innate potency of the heart. It joins deep study of Tibetan Vajrayana Buddhist principles with contemplative practices, skills development, ongoing group interaction, and community support. It is a journey of discovering one’s own brilliant sanity, and of learning how to exchange ourselves for others so that we can transform everyday life challenges into opportunities for openness and wisdom.

The experiences and methods conveyed in the two-year training include:

*Study and learning through an established curriculum that draws on the contemplative traditions, western psychology, and current research.

*Meditation, mindfulness, and compassion practices, plus practices aimed at developing sensory and emotional awareness and perception

*Experiential and process-oriented methods, creative process, and play

*Participation in community; group and partner work

*Participation in small regional continuity groups between seminars

*Participation in online seminars and forums

*Supervision by teachers with years of experience practicing and teaching contemplative psychology

Who is this program for?

Karuna Training is well suited for anyone with any interest in exploring the relational nature of being human. This transformative program uses a contemplative approach to help those who work professionally with others, as well as those who are interested in personal development. It is of particular interest to medical professionals, therapists, teachers, artists, business managers, meditators and parents.

Karuna Training is scheduled primarily over weekends, with three week-long intensives, and ongoing regional process groups

Origins:
Contemplative Psychology originated at Naropa University in 1974, under the direction of Dr. Edward Podvoll and Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche. In 1996, Melissa Moore, Irini Rockwell, and Paul Cashman took Contemplative Psychology to Europe, and with the help of several German psychologists and the Shambhala Community, founded Karuna Training. Today Karuna Training is offered in Germany, the Netherlands, France, Poland, Austria, Spain and the United States.

About the teacher:
Melissa Moore, PhD is currently the Executive Director of Karuna North America. Melissa has her MA in Contemplative and Western Psychology from Naropa University and her PhD in Psychological Anthropology from California Institute of Integral Studies. She is a Buddhist practitioner, meditation teacher and founding faculty director of Karuna training Europe, where she continues to teach. In addition Melissa is empowered as an Acharya (Senior Teacher and Preceptor) in the Shambhala Buddhist tradition and a long time student of Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche and Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche since 1979.

Melissa is currently a Senior Executive of Family Service Agency (FSA) of San Francisco and the founding Director of The Felton Research and Training. The Felton Institute is dedicated to research and training in best practices that help providers to raise the bar of community mental health services for the most marginalized populations suffering from severe and chronic mental illness.
