FREMONT, Ohio — With heavy hearts, a shocked and shaken Fremont community prepared to honor one of their own Thursday night.
“You watch them grow up and become great people, someone who you knew was going to make a difference in the world. He would have been one of those people,” said Jose Hernandez, former principal of Fremont Ross High School.
Hernandez is among the speakers at a vigil to honor Cory Barron, 22, of Fremont.
Barron went to a Jason Aldean concert at Progressive Field last Friday.
His body was discovered in a landfill four days later. His autopsy has been completed, but the results are preliminary and won’t be released for at least one month.
Thursday night’s candlelight vigil was set for 8:30 p.m. on the front lawn of Fremont Ross High School.
People were asked to wear purple and white.
“I was Cory’s principal for four years. He played football, pretty good student, honor student, just a good ‘ole American kid. He came from a wonderful family,” said Hernandez.
Donations will also be collected at the vigil.
The money will go to Cory Barron’s funeral and to his family for any expenses that have accumulated.
“It’s not something that you would ever expect to happen to someone that you know,” said Jill Ivy, of Fremont.
Ivy organized a fundraiser at the Little Caesars pizza on West State Street.
“On Monday the 28th, we are going to take a portion of our profits and donate it to the Barron Family,” said Ivy.
