INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Oct. 16, 2015) - Residents are being encouraged to come together to build a stronger city and prevent crime. An event called Neighbor Power aims to inspire people to take back their neighborhood.
The free event is happening on Saturday, October 17 on the campus of Marian University. It runs from 9:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m at Marian Hall, located at 3200 Cold Spring Road.
More than 350 community leaders are expected to be in attendance to share their insight on building a better city. Staff with the City of Indianapolis will also offer workshops on topics like code enforcement and abandoned homes.
Residents are also being encouraged to get involved in the political future of Indianapolis. Mayoral candidates Chuck Brewer and Joe Hogsett will talk about their plans to bolster neighborhoods during a free lunch.
"A strong community that has a common bond, a common goal of safety will usually cooperate with the police and we'll get more information and that will in turn keep their neighborhood safer," said Lt. Richard Riddle with IMPD.
Martha Baker Blue, a former neighborhood president, hopes more people will step up to make a difference on their street. She created a program called 'Walk Urban Indy' where residents meet up and walk the neighborhood together.
"I think that if you continue to let crime dominate the conversation without doing anything and still sitting in your homes and still complaining you kind of get what you get," said Martha Baker Blue, a resident in the historic Watson Park neighborhood.
