FISHERS – To deal with a situation involving an active shooter, you certainly need training.
But you also need equipment, and now Fishers’ fire department is getting new protective equipment, should the worst happen here.
“It’s a helmet and a vest very similar to what you might see emergency responders using with the police department,” said Capt. John Mehling. “It can happen anywhere, we hope it never happens here (and) we hope it never happens anywhere, but if it does we want Fishers to be ready to respond.”
“It’s important equipment,” said John Erickson with the Indiana Department of Homeland Security. “It’s the kind of thing you have to be cautious about these days, and we certainly want our public safety community to be ready for that type of situation.”
Dozens of departments around the state will get money for other types of equipment, too.
The Lawrence fire department got $4,000 for a new thermal imaging camera, and so did Danville.
Carmel will receive $4,000 for a new in-vehicle helmet containment system, while Noblesville’s police department got more than $2,700 for new defibrillators.
“From a public safety standpoint I think it’s very very helpful,” said Erickson. “These are the kind of basic things that are hard to fit in a volunteer fire department or a small community’s budget, or even a large community’s budget.”
Meantime in Fishers, they’re thankful for the extra money to help keep their first responders safe.
“Everybody wants to go home the next day,” said Mehling. “Unfortunately the work we do puts us in these types of situations and anytime we can help protect our firefighters, we’ve got to take those steps.”
According to state officials, awards were given to 112 recipients in 62 counties.:
