SACRAMENTO–

The 2-year-old “bait bike” programs utilized in Midtown/Downtown and in Natomas has hit the streets of South Sacramento.

With $3,000 in donations from the Mack Road and Florin Road Partnerships, the Sacramento Police Department purchased three bikes to use as bait on the streets of South Sacramento.

“We know that the people who steal these bikes are also the ones who commit others crimes, many times against our businesses,” Verna Sulpizio, the executive director of the Florin Road Partnership, said Friday morning.

Last year there were nearly 150 reports of stolen bikes in the South Sacramento area according to police reports.

In the areas where the “bait bike” program has been implemented, more than 60 arrests or citations occurred.
