DENVER — It’s a soldier’s ultimate sacrifice: giving their life for their country. But for the families of the fallen, the sacrifice continues.
The Gold Star Wives of America are holding their 68th annual national convention in Denver.
They’re in the Mile High City from all over the country and they all have one terrible thing in common. Every one of them lost the love of their life to war.
“My husband died of Agent Orange,” one military wife and conference attendee says. “My husband died, it was shot out of a helicopter in 1970,” another wife says.
These widows of war wear a uniform, sadly but proud, of the Gold Star Wives of America.
“It’s so important because of the support we can offer to each other, and especially to the new widows, to tell them we’ve walked that walk, we’ve mad that journey,” says Denver Chapter President Patti Sampers.
Part of their visit to Denver included a stop at the Colorado Freedom Memorial.
The ladies say there is no such thing as closure. “Every day when you hear about someone being killed in Iraq and Afghanistan my mind goes back to 1969.”
It’s the last group any woman would want to join, but as a member, these ladies wouldn’t dream of leaving.
