ST. LOUIS (AP) _ Missouri’s two U.S. senators have persuaded their colleagues to designate St. Louis as the nation’s chess capital.

A Senate resolution highlighting the city’s prominent role was approved Monday night after its introduction by Democrat Claire McCaskill and Republican Senator Roy Blunt.

Members of Missouri’s House delegation recently formed the bipartisan Congressional Chess Caucus to promote the game’s scholastic benefits.

St. Louis is hosting the U.S. Chess Championship and U.S. Women’s Championship for the sixth year in a row. The competition begins Wednesday at the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis in the city’s Central West End.
