As some of you know I'm from the UK and I've been doing a first round mock draft for the NFL section of a small sports forum website based here (started as a soccer forum but covers a few sports now) the past 3-4 years.  I've posted this years today and I thought I'd post it here as well for you guys to rip apart Have fun....

1.    Houston Texans – Jadeveon Clowney

Defensive End, South Carolina

Houston seem likely now to make the right decision, which is to take the guy who is a potential “once in a generation” talent and not reach for one of the top 3 rated Quarterbacks (who all have big question marks) purely on need.

2. TRADE – Minnesota Vikings – Blake Bortles  (St Louis gets #8, #40 & 2015 2nd  round pick)

Quarterback, Central Florida

The Jaguars at #3 need a Quarterback and they are playing their cards close to their chest but seem to like both Bortles and Johnny Manziel.  The Vikings could hold station at 8 and take whoever is left (or Teddy Bridgewater) but from what you hear Bortles is the clear #1 signal caller on their board so I think they trade up with a willing partner in the Rams and take Bortles at #2 overall.

3. Jacksonville Jaguars – Johnny Manziel

Quarterback, Texas A&M

And in my mock things land just the way David Caldwell the Jags GM planned them.  I believe the Jaguars are going to roll the dice on Manziel and that he is their first choice regardless.  The franchise needs some spark and some intrigue as well as some good Quarterback play and I think they take the punt here.

4. Cleveland Browns – Khalil Mack

Outside Linebacker, Buffalo

Mike Pettine was the Bills Defensive Co-ordinator last year and whilst in town he couldn’t have helped but notice the stellar play of University of Buffalo’s Khalil Mack.  He is the perfect OLB for Pettine’s 3-4 defense and Pettine attended his pro day in person.  I don’t completely rule out the Browns trading up to get him if they feel they need to, but I think they can hang fire and grab him at 4.

5. Oakland Raiders – Sammy Watkins

Wide Receiver, Clemson

Oakland hasn’t had a 1,000 yard receiver since Randy Moss in 2005.  Watkins is a guy who can catch the ball behind the line of scrimmage and make big plays happen, which seems a good fit with recently acquired veteran QB Matt Schaub who does his best work with screens and off play action.  If Watkins is there at 5, as he is in my mock, the Raiders will sprint to the podium.

6. Atlanta Falcons – Greg Robinson

Offensive Tackle, Auburn

I think the Falcons have two major needs in this draft.  One is to improve their pass rush, but with Clowney and Mack already off the board they turn to their other big need – protecting Matt Ryan and grab Robinson, who is rated higher than the two tackles who came off the boards 1st and 2nd overall in the 2013 Draft.

7. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Mike Evans

Wide Receiver, Texas A&M

Evans is an archetypal “go up and get it” big receiver.  At 6ft 5 and with an impressive 40 yard dash time I think the Buccs, who recently traded their #2 wideout Mike Williams to the Bills, take Evans and line him up across from Vincent Jackson giving them a pretty impressive, big, physical, 1-2 punch.

8. St Louis Rams – Jake Matthews

Offensive Tackle, Texas A&M

The Rams seem to be leaning towards giving Sam Bradford one more shot at Quarterback next season.  If they do he has to stay healthy, so bringing in Matthews who can play anywhere across the offensive line and is the most NFL ready tackle in the draft makes a ton of sense in terms of protecting their QB.

9. TRADE! New York Giants – Taylor Lewan (Buffalo gets #12 & #108)

Offensive Tackle, Michigan

With the Bills two chief targets off the board in the two picks immediately preceding them they are desperate to trade out to get a bit of value for their 3rd choice player (see pick 12).  The Giants have a need at left tackle and Lewan looks like the kind of big, nasty, day 1 starter that fits the bill, so at the modest cost of a 4th round pick Big Blue jumps up to nab him.

10.  Detroit Lions – Anthony Barr

Outside Linebacker, UCLA

The Lions new Head Coach Jim Caldwell has acknowledged the need for pass rushers.  Barr seems a schematic fit and if the top two receivers – Watkins and Evans – are off the board by the time the Lions pick then it seems the most logical selection.

11.  Tennessee Titans – Justin Gilbert

Cornerback, Oklahoma State

The Titans have a number of needs and could go in a few different directions here.  If Barr was still on the board he would be in play as is inside linebacker CJ Mosely and as a bit of left field option running back Carlos Hyde.  However, I think the loss of their best corner Alterraun Verner to the Buccs will force their hand here and Gilbert is the consensus number 1 corner in this draft.

12.  Buffalo Bills – Eric Ebron

Tight End, North Carolina

I think the Bills would be open to moving down further and picking up another extra pick, but I can’t see a team need that is likely to lead to that and therefore they take the 3rd target on their first round board Eric Ebron who could be a dynamic pass catching tight end who can go down the seam and make plays.

13.  St Louis Rams – Ha Ha Clinton-Dix

Safety, Alabama

Having addressed the offensive line with their 1st first round pick, the Rams address their next biggest priority with pick #13.  Their safeties were poor last season and so they take Clinton-Dix as a highly touted rookie solution.

14.  Chicago Bears – Aaron Donald

Defensive Tackle, Pittsburgh

The Bears have spent time, and money, revamping their defensive line in free agency by adding a whole lorry load of 4-3 defensive ends.  Notably thought, they haven’t replaced Henry Melton in the middle of that line who has gone to Dallas so if Aaron Donald is still on the board at 14 I think he is the pick.

15.  Pittsburgh Steelers - Darqueze Dennard

Cornerback, Michigan State

The Steelers two major areas of need are pass rusher and corner.  They could go the pass rush route in the first round and select Kony Ealy, however, in a division where you have to cover AJ Green twice a year and Josh Gordon twice a year you need young, physical corners.  Ike Taylor is done.  Darqueze Dennard is the replacement.

16.  Dallas Cowboys – Kony Ealy

Defensive End, Missouri

This falls nicely for the Cowboys.  They have a glaring need at defensive end and Ealy is pretty close to the best player available at this stage.  He is the replacement for Denver bound DeMarcus Ware.

17.  Baltimore Ravens – Marqise Lee

Wide Receiver, USC

The Ravens stated intent this off-season was to refresh their offense.  They may well draft a running back in the middle rounds with Ray Rice’s off-field problems and poor 2013 production but here they focus on more passing weaponry for Joe Flacco to use.  Lee can play as an outside speed guy, but is also elusive enough to operate out of the slot.

18.  TRADE! Cleveland Browns – Derek Carr (Jets get #26 & 68)

Quarterback, Frenso Stat

The Browns seem to have identified Carr as their guy and after waiting it out they move up from 26 to make sure they are ahead of the Cardinals who are the potential sleepers for a Quarterback pick in the second half of the first round.  The Jets are targeting a receiver and this draft is deep enough in that position to make the trade back a sensible move.

19.  Miami Dolphins – Zack Martin

Offensive Tackle, Notre Dame

Pretty much everyone is mocking Martin to the Dolphins.  The Jonathan Martin – Richie Incognito scandal cost them two starters on an already iffy offensive line last year and if Ryan Tannehill is going to make the step up in year 3 he needs better protection.

20.  Arizona Cardinals – Calvin Pryor

Safety, Louisville

I honestly think if Derek Carr is there then the Cardinals would be sorely tempted to nab him, sit him behind Carson Palmer for a year and then hand him the reigns.  He fits the prototype of a Bruce Arians Quarterback.  Teddy Bridgewater, however, doesn’t.  So rather than reach here for him the Cardinals strengthen their secondary with Pryor who is an old fashioned thumper in the box type safety, which makes him a particularly good fit in the run heavy NFC West.

21.  Green Bay Packers – Ryan Shazier

Linebacker – Ohio State

Calvin Pryor going one pick ahead of them would be a blow for Green Bay, so I think they look instead for help at linebacker.  CJ Mosely is one option, but I like the more mobile Shazier who can either play in the middle of that defense or on the outside and would help in shutting down the read option that has killed this team in the play-offs the past two seasons.

22.  Philadelphia Eagles – Brandin Cooks

Wide Receiver, Oregan State

I think there are two positions that the Eagles could go at 22.  One is corner and the other is receiver.  I just can’t help but think that Chip Kelly as an offensive guy will go offense first every time given a choice and that makes me lean towards a receiver.  The question then is big bodied possession receiver or home run hitting speed merchant (as a direct replacement for DeSean Jackson).  I got the latter route.

23.  Kansas City Chiefs – Kelvin Benjamin

Wide Receiver, Florida State

A lot of people are mocking offensive line to Kansas City, having seen 3 starters from last year’s group move on as free agents.  However, I’m thinking about the division they are in.  To compete consistently in the AFC West with the Broncos and the Chargers and their high scoring, high powered offenses, I think Andy Reid and co have to roll the dice.  Benjamin is a bona fide big time target.  There are questions about his hands but KC might have to ride with that.

24.  Cinncinati Bengals – Bradley Robey

Cornerback, Ohio State

Corner is probably the biggest need for the Bengals right now.  If one of the top pass rushers (Ealy for example) fell this far I think they’d look at that having lost Michael Johnson to the Buccaneers, but I don’t see that happening and therefore Roby is a nice fit and is one of the best players still on the board at this point.

25.  San Diego Chargers – Louis Nix

Defensive Tackle, Notre Dame

I considered Dee Ford, the pass rushing outside linebacker from Auburn with this pick.  He would fit the system and in a division where you face Peyton Manning twice getting pressure on the Quarterback is vital.  However, nose tackle is currently a huge hole right in the middle of that defensive front with last year’s starter having departed and if you are running a 3-4 you need a big bodied anchor in there that can stop the run.  Nix fits the bill.

26.  New York Jets – Odell Beckham Jnr

Wide Receiver, LSU

The Jets hold their nerve in the receiver race and benefit from their trade back.  They select Beckham who could possibly be above Cooks, Benjamin and maybe even Marqise Lee on their board anyway and have that extra 3rd round pick in their pocket.  Beckham will be a nice compliment to big splash free agency signing Erik Decker.

27.  New Orleans Saints – Dee Ford

Outside Linebacker, Auburn

Dee Ford could go earlier, to Cincinnati or San Diego, but if he is here he represents a nice option for the Saints.  New Orleans have done a nice job of filling some spots in free agency which allows them a bit a luxury pick in Ford.  But you can never have too many pass rushers.  Other options are CJ Mosely as an inside guy or possibly trading out of the first round altogether, maybe Jacksonville might want to come up for Ford and give the Saints their second and fourth round picks in exchange?

28.  Carolina Panthers – Joel Bitonio

Offensive Tackle, Nevada

The Panthers are coming off their best season in years and then have completely messed up the off-season so far.  There are now holes everywhere on this team, but none quite as gaping as left tackle... and given that they are going to need to put even more of the game on Cam Newton with the paucity of talent around him, protecting him is now a major priority.  This is a bit of a reach but Bitonio is the next highest rated tackle available with any experience of playing on the blind side.  He reminds me a bit of Cordy Glenn  the young Bills left tackle who many predicted would be a guard at the NFL level and yet has flourished in the key left tackle spot.

29.  New England Patriots – Austin Seferian-Jenkins

Tight End, Washington

The Patriots had problems at tight end last season.  The Aaron Hernandez situation, coupled with Gronkowski’s injury problems took away a major part of their passing attack.  Seferian-Jenkins would give them the option of running their old 2 tight end sets and is a versatile player able to block and get out and make plays catching the football.

30.  San Francisco 49ers – Kyle Fuller

Cornerback, Virginia Tech

A lot of people believe that the 49ers will use their plethora of 2nd and 3rd round picks to move up and grab one of the top 2 corners or even one of the top 2 receivers on the board.  I personally don’t see receiver as that big a need and it is a deep draft at the position and I don’t think the drop off between the top 2 corners and the rest is that stark.  Therefore I can see them holding station at 30, picking Fuller, and using those later picks to add further youth and depth to their defensive line and linebacking corps.

31.  Denver Broncos – CJ Mosely

Inside Linebacker, Alabama

Mosely (once considered a shoe in top 15 pick) sees his slide end at number 31 and the added bonus is he goes straight to a contender.  Wesley Woodyard had a mixed season inside last year for Denver and has moved on anyway in the off-season.  Mosely is a physical guy that can plug and play straight away in that defense and that added physicality is something John Elway has talked about his team needing if they are going to get Peyton a second ring.

32.  Seattle Seahawks – Morgan Moses

Offensive Tackle, Virginia

It’s odd to talk about major needs for the Superbowl Champion, but I think the Seattle offensive line had enough off days last year to consider it in need of some upgrades.  Morgan Moses would be a first year starter at right tackle and might even have the ability to play left tackle eventually.
