Located within ten minutes of downtown Portland, Industrial Strength is one of those weight rooms you always talked about building with your gym friends, but never got past the dream list you scribbled down on a notepad. Many of us spend our gym days dreaming about having access to competition caliber racks, plates and bars and being able to chalk up and then hook up all the chains and bands we can handle. Up till now, most Portlanders have had to make due with whatever they could drag into their neighbourhood family fitness facility. But the time to despair is over oh true believer of the iron universe! Because the doors to powerlifting paradise have been flung open and owner Tony Gracia is inviting you to join in the happiness of having all the specialty equipment you've seen in the catalogs at your fingertips and ready for your wielding. And there's even a burger bar and a bbq joint within 2 blocks for when the training day's done.
With 6,000 square feet of gym flooring, including two 50' astroturf strips and 1,000 square feet of professional jiu jitsu mats imported from Germany, there's plenty of space to get into becoming seriously strong. Located around the perimeter you'll find three custom made Olympic / powerlifting platforms with band attachments (made by a local craftsman) plus two Monster Lite Rogue Fitness power racks with 1" hole spacings, band attachments and two types of safety spotter arms. Keeping them company are two squat / bench competition combo racks from Texas Strength Systems (the official gym equipment line of The Hardcore Powerlifting Federation.) And, to go with the mega racks, Industrial Strength's purchased two EliteFTS adjustable squat boxes and two 0-90 adjustable benches from Rogue.
Adjacent these four racks are a Sorinex glue ham raise and a 14' x 6' Rogue Fitness rig, which consists of one monkey chin bar, a dirty south bar, two additional pull up bars, a flying chin up bar, three pairs of gymnastics rings, a TRX, two dip stations and a climbing rope. You'll never again have to wait to gain access to a body weight resistance station and you won't find yourself trying to workout with weights while a space invading, wannabe CrossFitter swings their legs within inches of your head. Owner Tony Gracia has solved that dilemma by giving your more than ample space to do your gravity resisting thing, whether it be barbell or body weight based.
And, speaking of barbells, how's this for a fulfilled Santa's wish list? Two limited edition $1,200 powerlifting bars from Ivanko, two Texas power bars, one Texas deadlift bar, one Uesaka Olympic Weightlifting bar, two Pendlay needle bearing Olympic bars (one for men and one with a smaller diameter for the ladies), 2 Rogue Fitness Matt Chan bars with additional smooth surface in the center to save your shins and one Rogue Bella bar. On top of all of these, Industrial Strength is also outfitted with two EliteFTS SS Yoke bars, one EliteFTS Spider bar, two Rogue rackable trap bars, one fat grip trap bar, one Swiss bar and a 3" thick, knurled fat bar from Perform Better. Whew! If you can't get strong with all of these weapons of mass construction, then you probably need to eat more protein!
To enhance your training experience, Industrial Strength's also added two EliteFTS Prowlers for the astroturf runways, a set of adjustable jerk blocks for the platforms and a Concept 2 rower for those seeking a different cardio enhancing vehicle. Adding fuel to their fitness fire they've also brought in a Sorinex War Hammer and Landmine, a full set of benchpress boards, a deadlift bar loading jack, an IronMind Rolling Thunder, a Battle Rope, fifteen NIKE Sparq medicine balls and an Ab Pavelizer from Dragon Door. And you don't even have to bring in your own chains and flex bands because both of the power racks are already fully stocked!
And just like every muscle car needs its chrome wheels, so too does a muscle shop need a proper selection of top shelf weight plates. Tony and his partner Mira Kwon decided to spare no expense and they went with the best that money could buy. Two complete sets of chrome lined, calibrated competition powerlifting plates from Ivanko Barbell Company fill the power racks on the south wall. The three platforms, which run along the west side of the giant room are decked out with 1,400 pounds of colour coded, competition bumper plates from Rogue and Pendlay Elite. And next to the Landmine and the glue ham raise sits a tree with over 700 pounds of urethane coated EZ lift Ivanko plates. Finally, if kettlebells are more your style, Industrial Strength's got almost 2,000 pounds of em and their Dragon Door and RKC sets run in pairs from 8kg up to the 48kg bulldogs.
Coach Gracia's spent his entire adult life studying the pursuits of strength & conditioning and the skilled art of competitive grappling. In addition to earning a masters degree in exercise physiology, and gaining experience lifting in kettlebell, powerlifting and Olympic Weightlifting meets, Tony's also put a decade of time in on the mats and he holds a brown belt from Impact Jiu Jitsu (the largest BJJ academy in Oregon and an affiliate of Industrial Strength.) So, over on the northern side of the training hall lay a thousand square feet of Zebra brand, 2" thick, competition jiu jitsu mats, which were shipped all the way from Germany as Tony's again made the choice to go with the best in the industry so his clients can reap the benefits.
