Rift Rogue Compendium.

This will go through all the main points you’ll need to know as a rogue, including things such as specs, gear advice, runes, crystals, PA and touching on some PvP stuff.

Note, this isn’t close to being complete, comprehensive guides will need to be written for the specs that currently haven’t got an updated guide with 4.0 - These will be added as they are written, and this will be updated as changes happen.

Fairly simple to start;

1.1 - Synergy Crystals.

With 4.0 there has been a simpler choice for Crystals, with different gear sets for PvP and PvE

PvE - This set requires a Comet of Destruction gear set (you get this from store bought pve gear or dropped Starfall Prophecy Expert gear (SPE):

Martial Crystal - ST dps crystal

Bruitish Crystal - AoE dps crystal

Salver’s Crystal - ST healing crystal

Medico’s Crystal - AoE healing crystal

Hero’s Crystal - Tank crystal

PvP:

Here we have a smaller option of crystals. This set requires a Slayer’s Garb gear set - Which is only obtainable from PvP store bought gear - Gear from Reaper Supply Caches do not count towards the set bonus.

Combatants Crystal - ST dps crystal (same as Martial)

Warmongering Salver’s Crystal - ST healing crystal

Warmongering Medico’s Crystal - AoE healing crystal

Note - PvP crystals are currently being downgraded in pvp.

The crystals give the same bonuses (at 0-2-3-4 pieces of gear) so the pvp crystal can be used in pve but pvp gear has less stats than pve gear

1.2 - Dream Orbs and Runes

With 4.0, new dream orbs have arrived, the new dream orbs currently only give Main Stat + Endurance, there are 2 versions - Prophetic (which is the best) and Visionary (which is the worst) - These can only be used on Helmets and Belts.

With 4.0 there is also a lot less runes for your gear, only being applied to Weapons, Legs and Seal (currently). Visionary is currently the worst - Prophetic is the best - Runes will be distinguished by having Visionary or Prophetic as a prefix.



1.3 Seals.

4.0 - New Seals! There are 2 viable seals that you can get at the moment - One crafted - One bought from the store for 1000 plat.

[For DPS]

Visionary Alacrity - Crafted - Made by Weaponsmiths +574 Dexterity

Dextrous Skystone - Store Bought - 1000 plat. To get here go to Rift Store (keybound with ] - Seals (at the bottom) +611 Dexterity

[For Tank]

Visionary Resolve - Crafted - Made by Armorsmiths +574 Endurance

Enduring Skystone - Store Bought - 1000 plat o get here go to Rift Store (keybound with ] - Seals (at the bottom) +611 Endurance

These provide a 37 stat difference between the crafted and store bought Seal, comparing the plat difference between these it’s not all that worth it. Going from the Zaviel Auction House (EU) the crafted seals can be bought for 90 plat - Of course if you’re min/maxing gear then get the BiS seals (which are the Skystones).

Note - The current Prophetic Rune for Seals requires a level 70 Seal - The Seals we have available currently are only 65 - So you would need to use a Visionary rune on your Seal until we get a level 70 seal (rumoured to be coming with Fortress Sieges/LFR)

1.4 Planar Attunement and how to spend it.

Planar Attunement (PA) - What is it?

Planar Attunement is an alternate advancement system introduced in Patch 1.5. Activated when a player reaches level 50, players earn experience points by questing, killing mobs and completing quests. A Planar Attunement bar automatically replaces the experience bar at level 70. Between 50-70 you will have 2 experience bars.

The cap for PA is 1709.

Depending on what you decide to be your main spec, there is 2 ways that you will be spending your PA.

As a dps rogue, you will be primarily going for AP and Dexterity. Below you will see what every PA tree has to offer you.

Earth: +57 End +12 Strength +12 Dex (+24 AP when wielding hammer/sword/axe/mace)

Air: +45 Dex (+24 AP when wielding a bow/gun/dagger)

Fire: +25 Str (+24 AP when wielding a bow/gun/sword) also gives honed edge +40 AP on one hand (can also be crafted)

Water: +45 Dex (24AP when wielding a hammer/axe/dagger/mace

Life: +45 End (+24 AP when wielding a hammer/bow/gun/axe/mace

War: +40 Armour +60 Endurance +30 Dex +15CP And gives Cleanse Soul (removes all debuff from the rogue)

Nature - Requires the completion of Earth and Life Attunement.

+32 AP +120 Armour + 163 Endurance +18 Strength +18 Dex

Cinder - Requires the completion of Fire and Death Attunement.

+6 Endurance + 151 Strength +6 Dex +32AP

Storm - Requires the completion of Air and Water Attunement.

So for DPS (healers should also follow this route, gives most AP/Dex) rogues this is how you should begin to fill out your PA tree:

Start with War, fill that out to max, then Air, Water, Storm (will be unlocked when Water is full), Earth, Dust (will be unlocked when Earth is full), Fire, Steam (will be unlocked when Fire is full), Death, Cinder (will be unlocked when Death is fully completed), Life, Dusk (will be unlocked when Life is full) and nature. That will give you the best stats for dps.

For tanks, the way you want to fill out your PA is different. You should fill your PA out like this:

War, Earth, Life, Nature (will be unlocked when you complete Life), Air, Dust (will be unlocked when air is complete), Death, Dusk (will be unlocked when death is complete), Water, Storm (will be unlocked when water is complete), Fire, Steam (will be unlocked when fire is complete), Cinder.

Along with all this it comes with some handy ports, abilities and extra resist, but resist isnt that important anyway, you can check them out yourself in game.

Note - This is the best way to level your PA for the fastest stat bonuses - When levelling you have the option to delve into the death tree to pick up Vampiric Essence to help you with solo, you can always reset your PA at max level, the first reset is free and any further resets are 100plat each.

It’s also worth mentioning when you hit 50, it’s useful to do the chronicle; Meridian/Sanctum: Ceremony of Attunement - At level 50 you will receive a mail from either Asha Catari or Cyril with a message about a ceremony for you, where you become “Attuned” - This gives you 200 Planar Attunement levels right off the bat (if you do it at level 50 with 0 PA levels, below is the amount it gives). So that would be worth looking into to get you started.

1.5 Rogue Stats and their importance.

Your stats and how they work.

Primary Stat: A rogue's primary stat is Dexterity. 1 point of Dexterity gives 0.75 Attack Power and 0.5 Physical Crit per point for rogues.

Secondary Stat: A rogues secondary stat is Strength, you still benefit from having strength but its much less effective than Dex. 1 point of Strength gives 0.25 Attack Power and 0.5 Physical Crit per point for rogues.

With 4.0 - Trion removed Tertiary stats on gear pieces and put them onto Planar Fragments (to be explained later)

Tertiary Stat: Attack Power. Crit Power. Physical Crit. (for dps)

Spoiler!

Crit Power and Physical Crit both have a soft and hard cap. Attack Power does not.

Crit Power soft cap is 40% and the hard cap is 50% - Ideally you would want to get Crit Power just below 40% as you will gain CP from consumables and raid buffs.

Physical Crit soft cap is 45% and the hard cap is 60% - But you shouldn't get close to this cap currently.

Stats that have a soft/hard cap just mean that past the stated cap they will be affected by diminishing returns. This means their effectiveness per point will be reduced.

For crit power, after the soft cap the effectiveness of this stat will be worth 1/5th of what it was worth before the soft cap.

And for Physical Crit the stat will also be worth 1/5th of what it was prior to the soft cap.

Tertiary Stat: Block. Dodge. Guard.

All 3 of these stats have a cap.

Block - 45% is the soft cap and 60% is the hard cap.

Dodge - Doesn't have a soft cap. Hard Cap is 20% (but it's unlikely you'll get close to this)

Guard - The current soft cap is 10% and the hard cap is 12%. - every point after the soft cap has 20% less effectiveness.

As these stats have a cap, it means they also suffer diminishing returns past their caps.

Every point of block after the soft cap gives 1/3rd of the benefit.

Endurance - Increases your health - Per point Endurance will give you 10 Health - So say you have 6160 Endurance it will increase your health by 61610. Point for point this stat is the best way to make sure you don't die.

Armor - Reduces physical damage taken based on attacker level. The lower the level of the enemy the less physical damage you take, the higher the more. Hover over your armor in your stat page to see.

Block - Blocked attacks deal 40% less damage, you gain block from gear. - Per point for Dexterity you will gain 1 point of dodge.

Guard - Guard reduces the damage taken by you and by allies within a small radius. This stat is only functional while Guardian Phase is active. You also gain one tenth of your dexterity as Guard.

Dodge - Fairly straightforward to explain - The more dodge you have the more chance you have to dodge the enemies attack. - Has no effect on magical attacks.

Dodge is worse than Block or Guard because it’s only a chance at dodging an attack (and a very low chance at that) which makes it unreliable in a raid situation - Whereas Guard is a flat % mitigation on incoming damage on both you, and nearby raid members. And block has a higher % to block an attack, 40% mitigation on blocked attacks at a much higher rate than dodging. - Per point of Dexterity you will gain 1 point of dodge.

As a rogue, you do not gain any benefit from stats such as Wisdom, Intelligence, Spell Power, Spell Crit.

1.6 Planar Fragments.

Planar Fragments - A new concept introduced with SFP as a way to improve gearing for both Main Characters and Alts - Tertiary stats have been removed from gear and placed onto Planar Fragments - This means you won’t find stats like Attack Power, Physical Crit and Crit Power on gear pieces anymore, only Armour, Dex, Strength, Endurance and Hit.

As you can see from the picture, the right side is currently locked - Possibly to be opened at a later date in SFP.

Fragments go by tiering, rarity and element - Some tiers are more desirable than others - The higher the rarity the more chance you’ll get of getting better stats.

Fragments come in all rarity levels, but always at infusion level 0. The rarity of a fragment determines how many secondary stats it starts with. This means that higher rarity fragments have less RNG than lower rarity ones.

White (Common) – No secondary stats – Safe to upgrade to infusion level 2

Green (Uncommon) – 1 secondary stat – Safe to upgrade to infusion level 5

Blue (Rare) – 2 secondary stats – Safe to upgrade to infusion level 8

Purple (Epic) – 3 secondary stats – Safe to upgrade to infusion level 11

Gold (Relic) – 4 secondary stats – Safe to upgrade to infusion level 15

You can upgrade your Fragments by Infusing them. If you click on the circled button in the picture below, it will bring up the infusion page. Infusion Level 15 is the max level for Fragments. Tiers 0-4 will always critically infuse. This means it will automatically go to the next level - From this point onwards the chance to critically infuse will be lowered - Meaning it will require more plat to reach the next infusion level.

- Remember to recycle fragments you don’t need in your Fragment Inventory (It’s got a limit of 200 that gets filled up rather quick)

1.7 PvP Fragments and gearing in PvP.

PvP fragments drop from Reaper Supply Caches - Any pvp fragment will always have “War” in the title of the fragment, for example;

PvP fragments do not get bolstered in PvP - Whereas PvE fragments receive (roughly) a 75% increase due to bolstering. This means you’re better off starting with PvE fragments and upgrading a set of PvP fragments to a high level

Gearing up in PvP is fairly simple - PvE gear is worse because it either gets downgraded or bolstered up to be slightly less than PvP store gear.

Gear that drops from PvP boxes is also sub-par (dex wise) but can be useful if you need the extra endurance (because some pieces will be Endurance heavy, others Dexterity heavy), as an example;

As you can see, exactly the same gear piece, slightly different stats. The loss of dex is only minor (9) but you gain a lot more Endurance (20), of course in terms of DPS the extra Dex would be more useful, but survivability in pvp is also extremely important, so you may choose to take more Endurance if you see fit. Note, pvp box gear does not give you a set bonus nor does it have hit - Which means you won’t be able to use pieces (Head, Chest, Legs) that should have hit on in pve.

- Weapons do not drop from pvp caches, these can be purchased with Challengers Marks (which cost 100k favor) in the Rift Store.

You’ll want to get the weapons early on because any other weapons will be downgraded/bolstered, they also provide a separate set bonus called Slayer’s Vengeance that increases your damage in PvP by 5%

Bolstered or Downgraded gear does not benefit from dream orbs or runes in PvP, which is why having pvp gear is just that much better when doing pvp (obviously)

Accessories and Essences are only obtainable via pvp caches - And of course, will be the best options to use in PvP (for PvE, pvp essences are roughly 3rd BiS if they are CP essences) and pvp greaters have the same stats as pvp lessers.

All gear pieces from pvp caches will have 2 variants, an endurance heavy and a dex heavy piece, it’s up to you to choose which is more desirable for you.

1.8 Gearing up in PvE

In 4.0 Trion released 3 dungeons. Intrepid: Darkening Deeps - Tuath’de Coven - Temple of Ananke. With this came an entirely new way of getting gear, it’s an Individual Loot system. How this works is every weekly reset you will gain 5 Individual Reward Tokens (more for patrons), which you can choose to spend on certain bosses - But every day you will be able to run each dungeon for “free” one time (per dungeon) and still get loot without spending your reward charges.

First thing first, before attempting to grind out gear from SPE’s (Starfall Prophecy Experts) it would be an extremely good idea to read up on strats for the SPE’s, it will not only help your gameplay but your teammates in those dungeons will appreciate it too - A great place to do this is RiftRaids, which has all 3 dungeon guides that you can read - As well as some useful information in other places of the site too.

Essences - Until we get more information as of a loot table for Essences im currently unsure the names of the essences that are BiS - Your best bet is to farm Major Rifts and get a full CP essence set (pvp lessers are good too but not optimal) - If you’re healing getting an AP set is generally a good idea.

Focus of Vengeance is the best focus to use for dps/heal - But requires you to be Revered with Planar Defence Force.

BiS gear set for tank -

With 4.0 Trion said the days of having 2 gear sets for pve is gone - This isn’t technically true. Whilst using the aforementioned gear set would work well for a tank, it’s certainly not the best. PvP gear has a lot more Endurance than PvE gear - So if you wanted to min/max your tank gear set you would want to get a full set of pvp store gear.

As for essences - attempt to get a full set of guard essences for your sigil.

Focus of Protection is the best focus to use for tank - But requires you to be Revered with Planar Defence Force.

1.9 Rift Consumables (PvE and PvP)

Another main factor in PvE/PvP is consumables (assuming you want to try-hard), there are a few that you need to be in a guild for (and the guild needs to have spent points in that guild-perk, others are crafted and the rest from PA.

- Guild Perks (these require a Silver Artifact that can be bought from Guild Charter Magistrates in major cities, Meridian, Sanctum and TB)

- Killing Spree (PvP only)

- Blood Thirsty (PvP only)

- (optional) Planar Protection - Requires 1 Planar Charge.

- (optional) Sigils/Banners of Rage/Concentration (Sigils > Banners) - Banners have a 35m range from where they are placed - Sigils act as a buff (hit all raid/party members within 35m of you)

Consumables

- Atramentium Whetstone - Increases attack power by 1000 (per weapon, only allowed on mainhand and offhand - not ranged)

- Gedlo Riding Chaps - Increases mount speed by 10% for 4 hours - Usable on Legs.

- Prophetic Chaps - Stealth Detection Radius +3 - Usable on Legs. Riding Chaps/Prophetic chaps do not stack - So pick the one you want.

- Celestial Padding - Reduces time to mount by 30%

- Pallasite Rune

- Sunken Tablet

- Searing Flame

- Soul Slice

- Atmospheric Mirror

- Salving Pod

- Prophetic Powersurge Vial

- Prophetic Healing Potion/Tonic

- Visionary Bottle of Critical Strikes

- Gedlo Curry Pot

- Atramentium Armor Plating

- Tuath’de Insoles - Increases movement speed by 10% Tuath’de Insoles and Ghostly treads do not stack.

- Ghostly Treads Stealth Radius +3

- Panacea - Really useful, removes all Poisons/Disease/Curses - Doesn’t share a CD with - - - Cleanse Soul (from War PA)

- Mercenary Recon Vial - Shows all (non-stealthed) enemies within the mini-map (very useful for watching certain points in pvp) - Can be bought from Rift store ] - Boosts - Scroll down to Tracking, it costs 6000 favor or 175 credits for non-patrons.

Planar Attunement Consumables/Buffs

Currently there are no updated SFP PA buffs, but some don’t share a cooldown with the 4.0, so you can alternate these whilst the other is on cooldown.

- Renewing Pod (doesn’t stack with Salving Pod but doesn’t share a CD)

- Salvaged Tablet (doesn’t stack with Sunken Tablet but doesn’t share a CD)

- Petrified Barnacle Rune (doesn’t stack with Pallasite rune but doesn’t share a CD)

- Consuming Flame (doesn’t stack with Searing Flame but doesn’t share a CD)

- Abyssal Crystal (doesn’t stack with Soul Slice but doesn’t share a CD)

- Lashers Bane Mirror (doesn’t stack with Atmospheric Mirror but doesn’t share a CD)

- Confluence of Dust/Steam/Dusk/Nature/Storm/Cinder - When all 6 of these are applied they are replaced with Confluence of the Planes - But if you wanna look cool in PvP with 10000 buffs applied just leave one out so the buffs don’t get replaced

- Serrated Edge - PA version of Atramentium Whetstone - Is worse but if you’re cheap - ------ Serrated Edge only costs 1 Planar Charge per weapon.

- Vampiric Essence - Overwrites Serrated Edge/Whetstones but useful for solo/open world content.

- Weapon Aegis - Useful in PvE and PvP (Small HP buff)

- Lightning Emblem - Better for tanking in PvE - As Dexterity is more desirable than Attack - - Power (because it increases Block/Guard)

- Wild Overgrowth - Only for open world pve content.

- Dessication - Only for open world pve content.

- Fading Light - Another Break Free (you get it from Attunement of Dusk)

2.0 Addons in Rift

Rift has a lot of Addons that you can use to help with your everyday rift life, all of the Rift Addons can be found on Curse.com, where you can pick and choose what Addons are good for you, here are a few addons I highly recommend to help really improve your play style.

1st - Rift Meter, this is a very simple dps meter that is able to track your damage, as well as the damage of other players in your group, this will allow you to monitor your performance and be able to see what damage you are pulling, as well as being able to switch around to other modes like healing, damage taken, death log etc. Very useful tool when doing raids/dungeons.

2nd - Karuul's Alerting System

This addon is able to track certain DoTs (damage over time skills), debuffs, buffs and cooldowns that you have, which makes it a lot easier to track the important things you need to be aware of in a fight. This one can be a little tricky to set-up, so i’ve made kalerts for all of the current rift specs on what abilities you should be looking out for (which will be below), just simple type /kalert in chat - Click File - Import Set and Copy and Paste the kalert set into the box and click Import to finish it, then you can click Edit Layout and choose where on the screen you would like to put them.

2.2 Rogue Specs.

61 Shadeborn

61SB/15BD/0Ranger - Currently the highest parsing Shadeborn spec, as well as rogues top dps spec on live.

Legendaries:

(SB) Strengthened Bond - Bond of Night penalty is now 0% (down from 30)

(SB) Void Touch - Every time a Finisher is cast whilst Void Touch is up it will proc void touch damage - affected targets take 50% more damage from Void Touch and Night Cloaked Blades

(SB) Scything Night - Applies Scything Depths - This stacks with Consuming Depths and ticks 5 times.

(BD) Deadly Strike - Grants 5 combo points on cast. 8 second cooldown.

(Ranger) Call: Razorbeast - Increases damage by 20% for 20 seconds. 30 second cooldown.

Tips on how to play;

Keep up the 60 second buff from Mirrored Strike

Keep up Strangulate

Don’t overwrite other Consuming Depths

Re-apply Void Touch immediately after it falls off (let it fall off to proc the damage) - Do not cast a finisher unless Void Touch is on the mob.

Keep up the damage buff from Innumerable Shadows (lasts 15 seconds)

1 combo point finishers are the way to go with this spec.

Use Scything Night at 1-4 CP, Deadly Strike at 1-2 CP, and Nexus of Darkness at 1-2 CP. Try not to delay any of these abilities too much. You want to use them as much as possible, and with the following priority:

Nexus of Darkness > Scything Night > Deadly Strike

61 Marksman

61MM/10RNG/5NB - Our highest ranged DPS spec as a rogue - If you don’t have Shadeborn this is the spec you want to be playing for top dps.

Legendaries:

(MM) Free Recoil - Empowered Shot now has a 1 second cooldown, grants 1 combo point and is off gcd - Every subsequent cast reduces the cast time of Empowered Shot.

(MM) Calculated Shot - Applies Targeting Telemetry to the rogue which causes all channels to tick twice as fast.

(MM) Rapid Fire Shot - 3s channel, Ticks faster the more combo points used.

(RNG) Call: Razorbeast - Increases damage by 20% for 20 seconds. 30 second cooldown.

(NB) Fiery Spike - Applies a debuff to the target causing them to take 8% more Physical damage from you.

Tips on how to play;

Keep up Barbed Shot

Keep up Fiery Spike (the debuff not the DoT)

Keep up Lightning Fury debuff

Don’t put Calculated Shot on CD.

Don’t clip your channels.

Legendaries:

(Sin) Thread of Death - Allows for stealth abilities to be used out of stealth with a 25% reduction.

(Sin) Assassinate - Now procs all of your poisons.

(Sin) Virulent Poison - Increases the damage of the next 3 non-assassin finishers by 100%

(SB) Void Touch - Every time a Finisher is cast whilst Void Touch is up it will proc void touch damage - affected targets take 50% more damage from Void Touch and Night Cloaked Blades

(Ranger) Call: Razorbeast - Increases damage by 20% for 20 seconds. 30 second cooldown.

Tips on how to play;

Keep up the 60 second buff from Mirrored Strike

Keep up Strangulate

Keep up Jagged Strike and Impale (Puncture isn’t worth it)

Don’t overwrite other Consuming Depths

Shadow Flurry will be your main finisher.

Tips on how to play;

Keep up both Blade and Soul Parity + Fated Blades

Use Twin Cleave at the last second of your dances - Use Empyrean Bolt to reduce the cooldown of Twin cleave to get a 100% uptime of BaSP/Fated - These should never drop off.

Use Hundred Blades as a disconnect ability if needed. You can cast this 3 times consecutively (17 stacks of the debuff) before getting drained.

Legendaries:

(NB) Dusk Strike - Allows stacks of Emptiness (the buff that causes Dusk Strike to hit harder but use more energy) to be consumed by finishers. Now causes Dusk Strike and Finishers to deal 20% more damage per stack (up from 10% and finishers are new) stacks to 5.

(NB) Dark Descent - The next 6 (up from 3) rogue Finishers do not consume combo points. Lasts 15 seconds. After this effect ends you will gain 4 combo points per second for 15 seconds. Whilst Dark Decent is active NB finishers will not consume stacks of Emptiness granted by the Dusk Strike Legendary

(NB) Hellfire Blades - Weapon Ability attacks deal an additional x Fire damage in a 7m area around the target. Lasts 15 seconds. No longer counts as a weapon Enhancement. 30 second cooldown, with no GCD.

(RNG) Call: Razorbeast - 20% damage increase for 20 seconds. 30second cooldown.

(Sin) Virulent Poison - Increases the damage of the next 3 non-assassin finishers by 100%

CD Usage -

With 4.0 There was a substantial change in how support CD’s work. Orchestra, Lava Field and Enrage all apply a 5 minute debuff similar to Flaring Power.

Orchestra is more useful than Lava Field, as it will be easier to hit more players with it (Lava Field is a ground aoe whereas Orchestra will follow the rogue around, if Legendary)
