What's your opinion on pad selection?

I have few pads at the moment and don't really want to get more as I just got these. I'm using a medium cut pad going over with a heavy cut compound. I'll get most of the swirls and oxidization out within the 1st or 2nd 6-8 passes each. There's plenty of scratches on the car so I keep going over the same area unusually long. I also haven't been using the polisher with a lot of downward pressure so far.

Is using the medium cut pad on an area for a long time = using a high cut foam pad shorter amount of time?

Is using the medium cut pad with a lot of pressure pushing down on the polisher = using a high cut foam pad?

I also have a polishing pad, but no finishing pad. It hasn't been sunny out really but for the short time I did take a look outside the paint does reflect like a mirror and didn't see any swirl marks. I've put my coating of sealant on too for some panels...

Would I be wasting my time effort and money to go back with a heavier cut pad, then finalizing with an actual finishing pad and polish?
