I had another thought that might also work.
But for when there is no real 'primary character'
(such as lifting a log - where everyone is contributing equally rahter than helping one person)

You give the task an average difficulty (14) and all participants roll.
However, the GM assigns a 'required success margin'.
Basically, the SMs of all the participants added up must beat the required SM.

So, Bob, Maggie, Jane and Wulfgar are lifting the log again.
The GM tells them the Required SM is 15.
They roll against 14 and get:
Bob - 20 (SM 6)
Maggie - 12 (Fail)
Jane - 22 (SM 8)
Wulfgar - 20 (SM 6)

Adding up the SMs they get a total of 20, beating 15 for a success despite Maggie's fail.
So failure doesn't ruin the task, but does mean that character isn't helping and the others must pick up the slack.
