Problem
1. Please explain the problems with your fish. When did you notice the problems and did anything unusual happen that you think started them?
5 days ago I notices small white bumps on my angels head. I was visually diagnosed as hexamita. Since none of the other fish had any signs of it I was told to put a cup full of Metro+ in there food and feed it to all the fish in the tank. This seem to work but a day later all the Discus started to show signs of it and it has since gotten worse.
It should be noted that the nitrite and nitrate reading were very high when I had them checked 3 days ago so I must have done something wrong when I moved the tank to kill much the beneficial bacteria. I am sure this contributed to the current situation. I have since done 2 water changes, added a water conditioner and some Prime. I have also hooked up an establish I had the water checked last night and parameters were good.
I have also moved the 3 sickest fish to a 35 gallon established tank with a bare bottom and no other fish, temp in that tank is 86 degrees. Should I move them all to this tank?
2. Symptoms (i.e. turning dark, excess slime, not eating, clamped fins, flashing, darting, clamped gills, white/yellow/green poop, hiding, headstanding or tailstanding, white on tips of fins, rotting or fungus, blisters/white zits on fish, bloated, cloudy eyes, wounds).
Most of the discus are lethargic, have white film in places on them, not eating much, dark in color at times. Only the angel and discus are showing any signs of illness. The worse 3 are laying on their side near the surface in a Separate tank.
3. What medications/ treatments have you already tried and what were the results. Include dosage and duration of treatment.
I fed them food with Metro+, when that failed to work I did a 50 percent water change and treated with API General Cure and continues the feeding with the metro plus.
I have order metronidazole and it should arrive today .
Tank/Water
4. Tank size and ages, numbers and sizes of fish.
110 gallon 60 x 24 x 18. 7 Discus 4-6 Inch, 6 small Geophagus, 2 Angels, 3 - 3” clown loaches, 2 electric blue Acara, 1 very laid back Peacock cichlid 4”, 1 red crawfish
5. Water change regime (What percentage and how often). Right now every 2 days.
6. How long has tank been running? Is it bare bottom? If you have substrate, what type and how deep is it?
9 days ago I broke the tank down moved it and re set it up before adding all the fish above. It had been an over stocked African cichlid tank with a gravel botton so there should have been plenty of bacteria. I also hooked up the same FX-5 filter for the first 4 days it was set up and there is a new large sump.
7. Do you age your water? If you do for how long and what is the ph swing. No
8. Parameters and water source;
Note: Water Parameters are important in diagnosing problems within a tank. If you don't own test kits for the following information, you can purchase them, test your parameters and post this info as soon as possible.
- temp __84___
- ph _____7.4
- ammonia reading ____
- nitrite reading ____
- nitrate reading ____
What type of water or combinations of water sources do you use? If it is an RO/tap/well water mix, please list percentages in the mix.
- well water ____
- municipal water __x__
- RO water ____
9. Any new fish, plants or inverts added recently. All fish are new
10. Include any pictures or videos you have which shows the symptoms. If you can't add them to this post, please provide a link to them.
