Ray L. Cox

Ray Lyn Cox, Former Kansas State Representative, age 81, of Bonner Springs, KS, passed away on Sunday, May 10, 2015 at his home while surrounded by his family. Memorial Services will be at 7:00 pm, Friday, May 15, at the Bonner Springs United Methodist Church in Bonner Springs, KS. With private family committal to follow at a later date. The family will receive friends at the visitation from 4 to 7 pm, Friday afternoon, prior to the service, also at the church. The family suggests memorial contributions to the Ray Cox Scholarship Fund in care of the Alden-Harrington Funeral Home.

Ray was born on October 1, 1933 in Topeka, KS, and grew up in Lawrence, KS, graduating from Liberty Memorial High School in 1951. He later enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served in Italy and Austria. He then attended the University of Kansas where he received both a Bachelors and Master's Degree in Education. Ray taught and coached football at Wyandotte High School in Kansas City, KS., and then moved to the Bonner Springs area in 1963 where he was a longtime Teacher, Coach and Administrator. He also serves on the Bonner Springs – Edwardsville USD #204 Board of Education and has for multiple terms over many years. He started an investment consulting company in 1973 which continues today as Cox & Neal, LLC in Bonner Springs. Ray was elected in 1992 and served thru 2006 to the Kansas House of Representatives where he served in many leadership positions and was proud to have supported many issues including the S.I.D.S. Network in Kansas. He was the Bonner Springs Marion Vaughn Community Service Award Winner in 2008 and had held many positions in local civic groups. He was preceded in death by his brother Monte Gene Cox in March of 2015 and a Grandson Jeremy Bray in 2014. Ray is survived by his wife of 27 years; Judy Cox of the home, one brother Dennis Cox; five children Jan Goff, Kristi Bray (Bruce), Monte Cox (Terri), Christa McCloud (Craig), Robin Neal (Tim); ten grandchildren Alison, Brandon, Megan, Blake, Monte Ray, Amber, Cody, Conner, Kaden and Julia; and 7 great grandchildren.

Robert L Eisenbach

Robert L. (Bob) Eisenbach, 81 of Tonganoxie, Ks passed away May 7, 2015. Funeral services are 2:00 pm Tuesday May 12th at Terrace Park Funeral Home, 169 Hwy & Shoal Creek Parkway, Kansas City, Mo. Bob was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict, and later retired from the service. He was a Property Assistant with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, retiring again after over 40 years of service. Howard E. & Mary K. Lynch

Memorial services for Howard Ellsworth Lynch, 94, and Mary Katherine Lynch, 90, Lawrence, will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 16, 2015 at Trinity Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Lynch died February 8, 2015 and Mrs. Lynch died Monday, February 16, 2015 at their home.

She was born March 13, 1924 in Lawrence, the daughter of Solon J. and Mildred K. Longnecker Markley. Mary graduated from Liberty Memorial High School in 1942, and went on to attend the University of Kansas.

He was born January 26, 1921 in Lawrence, to Albert Penn and Lela Helen Howard Lynch. He graduated high school in 1938.

Mrs. Lynch worked at Weavers department store for 3 years as a telephone operator, at Sunflower Ordnance Works for 7 1/2 years as a receptionist, and retiring from Farmland Industries after 26 years as a PBX Operator.

Mr. Lynch worked at Lockheed Aircraft in Burbank, California from 1940-1942. He served in the US Air Force from 1943-1946 and was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant. He worked at Fritzel-Jayhawk Creamery from 1946-1948. Mr. Lynch was a mail carrier for the US Post Office from 1948 until his retirement in 1978. He also worked for the Douglas County Rural Water District #5 from 1979-1986. He was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles.

Both were members of Trinity Lutheran Church for 68 years.

They were married, June 16, 1946 in Lawrence, and celebrated 68 years together.

Mr. & Mrs. Lynch are survived by sons, Galen Lynch of Canadian, Texas, and Ronald Lynch of Lawrence, Kansas; 6 grandchildren; and 7 great grandchildren.

A son, Jerrald Lynch preceded them in death in May of 2012.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Visiting Nurses Hospice, sent in care of the funeral home.

Duane L. Morgan

Duane L. Morgan, 77, of Ottawa, Kansas, passed away Saturday, May 2, 2015, at Ottawa Retirement Village.

Graveside services were held Friday, May 8, 2015, at Quincy Cemetery, Quincy, Kansas.

It was followed by a family and friends dinner at the Methodist Church Fellowship Center on Main Street in Virgil, Kansas.

Duane was born Wednesday, June 16, 1937, in Wichita, Kansas, the son of Lee and Edna (Ditty) Morgan.

He attended school in Jefferson and Leavenworth Counties before pursuing work as a construction worker in Eureka County, Yates Center, Altoona, and various other places.

Duane was united in marriage with Erma Myers December 14, 1964 in Edwardsville, Kansas. They were married 27 years prior to their divorce. One daughter was born of this union, Cindy Hontz, who survives of Gardner, Kansas.

Other survivors include his sister, Rita Lovell and husband Harvey; maternal aunt, Bev Ditty; and numerous cousins.

He was known as a loving and caring person who was friendly to everyone and loved dogs, cats, and horses.

Dale Atherly Pennybaker

Dale Atherly Pennybaker, 89, Lawrence, KS, passed away on Sunday, May 10, 2015 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital with his family by his side. He was born August 6th, 1925 in Strawn, Kansas (now under John Redmond reservoir) to Earl and Flora (Atherly) Pennybaker. His family moved to Severy, Kansas when he was 3. They moved to Hartford, Kansas in 1942 where he finished high school and was very active in all sports. He started college in the fall of 1943 but was interrupted by military service during WW II. He served in the South Pacific in the Army, making several beach landings. He then was a part of the occupational forces on mainland Japan until discharged in February, 1946. He returned to college at Kansas State Teachers College (now Emporia State) where he obtained a BS in Education in 1949. His education was again interrupted when he was called back to service in Korea in 1950-1951. He returned to KSTC to finish an advanced degree, earning his MS in Administration in 1955. There he met his future bride of 60 years, and on July 31st, 1953 he married Rita Thompson in Emporia, Kansas.

He taught and coached at several different high schools (Gridley, Mound City, Parker, and Burlington) in Kansas before obtaining his PhD in Physical Education from Iowa University in 1956. He was then a coach and athletic director at Midland Lutheran College in Fremont, Nebraska (1956-1964), Minot State College in Minot, North Dakota (1964-1966), and Wayne State College in Wayne, Nebraska (1966-1969). In 1965 he took the USA AAU Track Team to Africa for 50 days. In 1969 the family moved to Evergreen, Colorado where he continued in coaching and public school administration. He retired in 1985 as athletic director of Lakewood High School, Lakewood, Colorado. They moved to Lawrence, Kansas in 1989 where he was active in Dorsey-Liberty Post 14 American Legion, VFW, Cosmopolitan Club, and Redeemer Lutheran Church. He and his wife traveled extensively and played lots of golf in their retirement. In 1996, Dale was inducted into the Midland University Athletic Hall of Fame, and in 2007 the Hall of Fame Corridor was named after him.

Dale was preceded in death by his wife, Rita. He is survived by his son, Kent Pennybaker (Janet), Lawrence; his granddaughter, Atherly; and his grandson, Austin.

Visitation will be held at Warren-McElwain Mortuary, Lawrence, Kansas, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Monday, May 18th, 2015. Services will be held at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Lawrence, Kansas, at 10:00 am on Tuesday, May 19th. Following the service Dale will be laid to rest at Memorial Park Cemetery, Lawrence, Kansas, with full military honors.

Frances Theno

Frances Theno, lifelong resident of Bonner Springs, Kansas passed away on Thursday, May 7, 2015 at her home. Funeral Services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 12 at the Alden-Harrington Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Theno Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends at a visitation from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the service also at the funeral home. Memorial contributions can be made to the Walnut Grove Bible Church or the Bonner Springs Animal Rescue; both in care of the funeral home.

Frances was born at home in Rural Bonner Springs on October 30, 1924 to John and Hattie (Radcliff) DeMaranville. She attended Loring and Dafer Grade Schools and Bonner Springs High School. She was a longtime member of the Walnut Grove Bible Church. Frances married Matt (Bud) Theno on May 29, 1946 in Kansas City, Kansas. Together with their four sons they operated a grain and dairy farm operation until Bud's death in March 2011. Fran opened a fabric and quilt shop on the farm in 1988, which she continued to manage until her health declined.

She was preceded by her husband, a newborn son, Michael, and granddaughter Kristin and her baby Evie. Also preceding her in death were two brothers Clarence and John DeMaranville and two sisters Grace Houdashelt and Thelma Coon.

Survivors include four sons: Mathias of Linwood, KS., Martin (Helen), Thomas (Debbie), and Jeffery all of Bonner Springs. Also surviving are eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, one sister Myrtle Gallup, many nieces and nephews, and her many cats that she loved.

Alta Maxine Vorhies

Graveside services for Alta Maxine Vorhies, 86, Lawrence will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 15, 2015 at Memorial Park Cemetery in Topeka. She passed away Monday, May 11, 2015 at Medicalodges Eudora.

Alta was born January 30, 1929 in Topeka, KS the daughter of Thomas and Edna O. (Ellis) Andrews.

She belonged to the Eudora United Methodist Church.

She was a Supervisor at King Radio and worked in parts ordering for Allied Signal for more than 21 years before retiring in 1993.

She married Kenneth Dean Vorhies, Sr. April 26, 1947 in Lawrence. He preceded her in death April 17, 2006.

Survivors include three daughters, Felicia Brown and husband, Stan, Lawrence, Sue Cusimano and husband, Rocky, Winthrop Harbor, IL, Bethuelle Cobleigh and husband, Randy, Kansas City, MO; one son, Kenneth Dean Vorhies, Jr. and wife, Janet, Lawrence; five grandchildren; and four great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; six sisters; and four brothers.

Memorial contributions may be made in her name to VNA Hospice or Medicalodges Eudora Activities Fund and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
