Moving FAQs

When will you move?

We will begin the move on July 9 and will be closed for the following 2 and a half weeks, until July 25. The grand opening of our new building will follow on July 26. To learn about grand opening events, click here. While we are closed, stay tuned to our social media pages (Facebook and Twitter) for updates and announcements.

Why do you have to close for so long?

Since we’ve been in the temporary space, out collections have been split – only about half of our materials were housed in the old Borders building, and the other half were held in a storage unit. We will be bringing all of these materials back together in our expanded space. In addition, the building is not only new to the community, but new to our staff! Part of our closure will be used to train staff on the new spaces and new technology.

What services will be available during the closure?

Library staff will work to get items on hold available for pick up. As many as possible will be filled, but during this busy time, we appreciate your patience in fulfilling holds. If you receive an email notification saying your hold is ready, you can pick it up at the 700 New Hampshire location during the following times:
Friday, July 11 – 4:00 to 7:00pm
Saturday, July 12 & Sunday, July 13- 12:00 to 4:00pm
Monday, July 14 through Thursday, July 17 – 4:00 to 7:00pm
Holds can be placed via our catalog while we are closed. We will fill these holds as we are able to find the items, but please expect longer delays than usual.
Book drops will operate as usual. All of our remote book drop locations around town are a great place to drop off your books!
As we move our tech needs, some of our services will be temporarily unavailable. This includes phone lines and even some of the services in our catalog (placing holds, etc.). We will work to get these services back up as quickly as possible.
Once phone lines are back up at (785) 843-3833, lines will be staffed to answer patron inquiries.
Interlibrary loan services will not be available from July 3 to July 26.
Book van service will run normally on July 9 and July 11. It will not run the following two weeks, July 13 through July 26.

What about due dates while you’re closed?

No items will be due during this time. All due dates will be adjusted so that items are due after we re0open. No fines will accrue during this time!

How can the community help?

We are so grateful for all the offers of volunteer help during the move! We will use library staff and a professional moving company to execute the move, and do not anticipate needing community volunteers during that time. However, we do need your help in other ways:

You can help us spread the word! Tell your neighbors, friends, and family that we’re closed, and check our social media pages for updates (like discounts to local businesses while we’re closed!).
You can be patient and understanding during this time of transition. While we are working on a move that is efficient, timely, and smooth, we know that there will be unforeseen issues and problems that occur. As we enter into a time of great change for our organization and our community of users, please bear with us and know that we are working to get your public library up and running in its temporary home as soon as possible!

What if I need to contact the library while you are closed?

Our phones will be down for a short while during the move, but we anticipate getting them online quickly. Our social media team will be mobilized to monitor Facebook and Twitter during this time, and will be able to answer questions and post updates about the progress of the move. Via our website you can email us. Finally, the best way to stay informed about what is happening during them move, or any other time, is to sign up for our weekly eNewsletter, Connections.
