Use something like MHDD and check if :
1 - Can it detect the drive with correct model and capacity ?
2 - Can you "Scan" the start of the drive ? Test it for some sec. only to see if it can read/verify data at all. If so ...
3 - Maybe the drive have a "slow issue" or several bad sectors. You can attempt to clone with DDRESCUE and check cloning speed. If it's cloning at PIO speed then you should apply a slow fix.
In any case if data is important you should consider the use of a professional data recovery service.
