One final update. It turns out that even though I was able to get the installation to run using Rufus, something was corrupted and it introduced another set of problems.
Final solution: Burned the same ISO image to a DVD, verified it, and installed on the same A1SRM machine using a USB DVD drive. No problems at all. Didn't have to use the troubleshooting install and everything apparently works as it should.
