I decided that it might be fun to compare my spending from last year month-by-month to this year month-by-month. I feel like it might help me feel like I'm making progress, since my net worth isn't going to hit any big milestones for at least a while.
January 2013 Spending: 3474.47
January 2014 Spending: 2024.07
Wow! I was able to cut down spending a ton. Looking at my transactions from last year, most of that excess spending went into classes (testament to my Resolution-making), expensive kitchenware, charitable donations (I've since switched from giving in January to giving in December), and food. I spent $500 in food last January. Holy cow!
Looking forward to February, it looks like I spent 2384.90 last year. Some combination of expensive heating bills, eating out ($536!?), play tickets, and shopping put me over the $2000 mark.
Good news is it'll probably be easy for me to hit sub-2000 this February. And honestly, though I was definitely way too excessive, I think most of that was money well-spent. But now it's definitely time to really rein in the spending.
