MONDAY 12/17

6-8p (Red Room) Character Building for the Stage and Page w/ Alex Berry

Rich, deep characters are about as common as rich, deep men. They always take a little longer to find, but are well worth the wait. In this workshop we will go through the steps to help you identify characters, pull out their most identifiable trait(s), heighten and define who they are, and finally placing them in an environment that fits your needs (stage play, screen play, etc). Requirements for this workshop are a pen, pieces of paper, and a desire to "if this then what" the human spirit.

Alex Berry is the Artistic Director and sketch teacher at The New Movement . She is a playwright, a poet, and above all a tormented, thinking person. She is was/is the editor-in-chief for Lowlights Magazine and holds quiet aspirations to do a photo essay about jukeboxes in capitol cities.

6-8p (TNM Stage) All the World's A Stage! w/ G-Su Paek

Improv(e) your improv with some basic tools designed for stage actors! Add to your scene by being aware of where you are physically and learn how to play with space in a theater. If you are a improviser (or hoping to be one) without ANY previous acting experience or just want to brush up your skills, this might be the workshop for you!

G-Su Paek is a Level Zero teacher at The New Movement. He has over 10 years experience as an improviser and is a semi-professional actor. He currently does improv with TNM house troupe "Disco Box" and has big dreams as well as a big appetite. For comedy.

Let's make our emotions work for us! We'll do focused emotion and reaction work to learn how are body language and tone influence the directions are performance's take. Never be bored, everything matters!

Micheal Foulk is an instructor and doer of important tasks at The New Movement and one third of the comedy pyramid Handbomb and member of the late great Spirit Desire. If you don't feel like talking to him about comedy, feel free to bring up his love of over wrought sad drunk guy music. That'll be a long conversation.

We work through some exercises and bullet points of what comprises an improv education with our conservatory. This class is FREE and is weekly. WEDNESDAY 12/19

6-8p (TNM Stage) "Opposite" Comedy w/ Mark Carpenter

The nerd and the jock, the supermodel and the elephant man, the

President and a talking squirrel. Big differences can set the stage

for big comedy. This workshop promotes comedy that occurs when two dissimilar personalities or worlds interact. Opposite Comedy workshop will teach you to quickly find the perfect compliment to what's already been established on stage and how to play those opposing viewpoints without throwing a scene off balance into crazy town.

Mark Carpenter has been performing improv comedy for over 5 years and currently teaches at the New Movement. Past students have said of Mark's instruction, "He knows his stuff," and "I enjoy his

constructive criticism," and "His scene work tips and suggestions were

a great help," and "He looks angry, but he isn't actually angry." You

can see Mark and some other guy whose name I can't remember in the improv duo Opposites every Wednesday at 8pm at The New Movement Theater.

6-8p (Red Room) Getting Physical w/ Aaron Walther

When we develop characters on stage, we often start with perspective and vocality and throw in physicality as an afterthought. In this workshop, we'll flip that process around and explore the extent to which our physicality informs these other two components of character with the goal of having them naturally flow from the way we hold our bodies. With exercises borrowed from or inspired by the commedia del'larte, we'll see just how many different ways we can actually hold ourselves, evaluate the different ways in which this alone informs us of our characters, and then directly put these tools to work in our scenes. Due to the nature of this workshop, comfortable, loose-fitting clothes are encouraged and women are encouraged not to wear dresses. We want to have as much freedom of movement as possible.

Aaron Walther is an actor that has been learning and performing long-form improv for around 3 years, and he currently teaches Level 0 classes at The New Movement. He's performed in festivals and toured out of state. He's finished the curriculum at The New Movement and also took the Summer Intensive curriculum at iO Chicago. He has a history of comedy working The Texas Travesty and is known for his physical work on-stage.

THURSDAY 12/20

6-8p (Red Room) IMPROVISED STORIES w/ Patrick Knisely

TNM style improv digs into characters and theme, focusing on the comedy and avoiding plot or story. However, awareness of story and plot can greatly benefit all improvisers. In this workshop, we'll touch on the basics of narrative or story based improv, learning about the hero's journey and the basic building blocks of improvising a good story with a beginning, middle and end.

Patrick Knisely is a writer and performer from Austin, Texas, who currently teaches improv at The New Movement. He has performed in various comedy festivals across the United States. You can see Patrick and some other guy whose name I can't remember in the improv duo Opposites every Wednesday at 8pm at The New Movement Theater.

6-8p (TNM Stage) ALL for ONE, ONE for ALL -- a Teamwork Workshop w/ Amy Pacheco Jordan

Improv is not about one player; rather, it is about a group dynamic. To be a good improviser, you must be able to collaborate with other people. Knowing and trusting your fellow players is KEY.

In this workshop, Amy Pacheco Jordan will provide exercises that will bond you together with your fellow players as well as enhance your UBH skills in scenes! You will learn techniques for finding the game of the scene, playing to your strengths, and finding your place in the scene. Troupes are encouraged to take this workshop as a group!

Amy Pacheco Jordan is around the theater a lot. She performs with TNM Austin’s premiere musical improv troupe, Water Park. She teaches Level One Improv. She produces TNM Austin’s sketch comedy show, The Neighborhood. You should talk to her if you want to get more involved at The New Movement. Or just to brainstorm a new idea. Or for some witty banter. Check her out every Wednesday in the Megaphone Show!

SATURDAY 12/22

12p - 2p (TNM Stage) Driver's Ed. w/ Vanessa Gonzalez

You got the tools, now all you need is the swagger! Drive and support scenes confidently using basic scene elements. Learn how to trust yourself and nail down your role in the scene and know exactly what you are suppose to be doing. We will focus on scenes dynamics and how to make the best leading or supporting choices.

Vanessa Gonzalez is the Conservatory Director for The New Movement - Austin. 4p - 6p (Red Room) JUST THE FEW OF US w/ Micheal Foulk

Micheal Foulk is an instructor and doer of important tasks at The New Movement and one third of the comedy pyramid Handbomb and member of the late great Spirit Desire.
