Since the start of that hot streak in mid-January, Tampa Bay has compiled a 14-5-2 record and has pulled itself within four points of a playoff spot in the East. Meanwhile, the Senators, who are four points ahead of eighth-seeded Winnipeg, have lost two straight to begin March after closing last month with wins in six of seven games. Ottawa is also three points behind Boston for the Northeast Division lead. The Sens will try to get back on track tonight against a team it has had tremendous success against this season. Ottawa is 3-0 versus the Lightning in 2011-12 and has outscored Tampa by a combined 12-3 margin in those games. The Senators, who can complete a season sweep of the Bolts this evening, have won two of their last three games in Tampa. Tampa won its last two games in overtime, beating the Rangers and Hurricanes by identical 4-3 scores on Friday and Saturday, respectively. Steven Stamkos was the hero in Saturdays win at Carolina, as he scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner at 2:41 of overtime, to lift the Lightning to victory. Stamkos is leading the NHL with 47 goals, and with 80 points, is just one behind Evgeni Malkin for the league lead, Stamkos scored Saturdays game-winner while Tampa Bay was on a 4-on-3 power play following an ill-advised roughing penalty by Carolinas Brandon Sutter. Holding the puck in the high slot, Teddy Purcell slid the puck down below the goal line to the right of the net for Stamkos, who beat Carolina netminder Cam Ward with a quick wrist shot from the sharp angle. Purcell and Tim Wallace also scored for the Lightning, who got 24 saves from Mathieu Garon. Purcell enters tonight riding a personal-best nine-game point streak and has six goals and 13 assists during the run. The Senators have lost consecutive regulation decisions to begin March and are coming off Sundays 4-2 road setback against the Florida Panthers. Ottawa jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period, but Florida scored three times in the second to take control of the game. "Our competition level after the first period stayed the same and theirs, obviously, elevated to a higher level and they took over the game," Senators head coach Paul MacLean said. Jared Cowen and Chris Neil scored for Ottawa, while Robin Lehner stopped 24 shots in defeat. Lehner is 2-2 since taking over starting duties for the injured Craig Anderson, who is out indefinitely with a lacerated finger. However, Lehner was reassigned to Binghamton of the AHL on Monday and Ben Bishop was recalled in his place. Bishop was acquired by the Senators in a trade with the Blues after Anderson was injured, but he has yet to suit up for the NHL club. Dallas at Vancouver The Canucks hope they are just getting their slump out of the way before the playoffs. Vancouver tries to avoid a fourth loss in five games tonight as it takes on the hard-charging Dallas Stars. The Canucks are coming off just their second regulation loss since Jan. 15 (13-2-5), a 5-3 setback to the Sabres on Saturday. Vancouver has now split the first two contests of a seven-game homestand and trailed by three goals just over five minutes into Saturdays loss. Roberto Luongo was touched for the early tallies and was pulled after facing only seven shots. Dallas also moved into a tie with Phoenix for first place in the Pacific Division and the two clubs are two points up on San Jose and three ahead of Los Angeles in the division race. The Stars wrap a three-game swing tonight looking for a fifth straight victory on the road. Edmonton at San Jose The free-falling San Jose Sharks are on the verge of sliding out of a playoff spot in the Western Conference. Perhaps the return of their head coach can stabilize things. Todd McLellan is expected to be on the bench for the Sharks this evening when they try to avoid a third straight loss in a matchup with the Edmonton Oilers. San Joses bench boss has missed the past three games because of concussion- like symptoms suffered when he was accidentally hit on the head by a stick versus Minnesota on Feb. 26. That has left him unable to help his club shake out of its current funk, which features two straight losses and setbacks in eight of 10. The Sharks slide continued on Saturday in a 3-1 loss to the Blues. San Jose was held to just 19 shots on net and went 0-for-3 on the power play. "It didnt fully portray our lack of zone time and scoring chances," San Jose assistant coach Matt Shaw said. "Their level of hockey was dramatically better than ours and our execution was poor." Torrey Mitchell scored the lone goal and Antti Niemi made 29 saves for the Sharks, who now trail the Stars and Coyotes by two points for first place in the Pacific Division and sit eighth overall in the Western Conference. San Jose is only one point up on Los Angeles and Colorado for that final playoff berth. The Sharks have been held to just two goals over a four-game homestand that ends tonight. San Jose has won four of six and 10 of its past 13 meetings with Edmonton, but did drop a 2-1 shootout decision on the road in the most recent encounter on Jan. 23. Taylor Hall had the winner for the Oilers, beating backup Sharks netminder Thomas Greiss in the fourth round. Edmonton has lost five of its past six in San Jose and had a three-game road winning streak snapped with last nights 4-2 loss in Anaheim. The Oilers got a late goal from Shawn Horcoff in the second period -- a frame in which they totaled a season-high 22 shots on net -- and Jordan Eberle made it a one-goal game on his power-play tally with 1:46 to play. However, the Ducks found the empty net to seal the game and hand the Oilers their third straight loss. "Given the year and given where we are at, we feel like were a better team than where we are.
