Tuesday night was not exactly a must-win situation for the Winnipeg Jets, but when you struggle on the road, wins at home are critical. The Jets gave up the first goal but came back for a 2-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs, handing the Leafs their first regulation loss in the last seven games. Phil Kessel with is 30th goal of the season opened the scoring, but before the first period ended Chris Thorburn tied it with his second of year. Thorburn took a Zach Bogosian pass, drove the net and beat Jonas Gustavsson with a backhand shot. Jim Slater also drew an assist. "I call him sniper," was the comment from Coach Claude Noel on Thorburns goal. The game-winner came in the second with Johnny Oduya starting the play with a pass to Bryan Little. Little hit Blake Wheeler in full flight down the left side, Wheeler was stopped but Little followed the play for his 13th of the year and second in three games. It was another strong game from Wheeler. Ondrej Pavelec was again solid when he needed to be, with his biggest save coming in the third on a partial breakaway by Matthew Lombardi. Pavelec has now given up only 13 goals in his last seven games, and is 4-2-1 in that stretch. The Jets finished the game on an impressive note not allowing the Leafs to get out of their own zone to get set up in the offensive after pulling Gustavsson for the extra attacker. It was great fore-checking by the Jets. After averaging 22.8 shots on goal per game over the last five games, and missing the net with 24 shots in Montreal, the Jets fired 29 against the Leafs, and missed the net only seven times. With Washington winning over Florida and Ottawa losing to St. Louis, the Jets sit five points out of eighth in the Eastern Conference, but only four points behind Southeast Division-leading Washington. Skating with a purpose and playing with a flair that was missing during most of an injury-halted 2010-11 season, Malkin took over the Pittsburgh Penguins pre-season game against the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday the way that only an elite, motivated player can. In his first game since tearing two knee ligaments against Buffalo on Feb. 4, Malkin scored a goal, set up another and was dazzling at both ends of the ice as Pittsburgh won 3-2. And it wasnt just that Malkin produced points, it was how he generated them. Malkin, the fastest skater on the ice, fended off defenceman Garnet Exelby with one arm before switching from his backhand to his forehand to score against goalie Jimmy Howard. The 25-year-old Malkin is trying to rebound not just from the first serious injury of his career, but from a second successive disappointing season offensively. Perhaps a 77-point season in 2009-10 that followed his twin 100-pooint seasons can be blamed on the fatigue of coming off two consecutive runs to the Stanley Cup final and a right shoulder injury. But the dynamic qualities of his game that once put him on an above-all-others level with Crosby and Alex Ovechkin also were missing much of last season, when he slumped to 15 goals and 37 points in 43 games. It was the first time during an NHL career that began in 2006-07 that Malkin averaged below a point per game. For comparisons sake, Malkin had only one fewer point during a 21-game stretch in the 2007-08 season when, while carrying the Penguins at a Mario Lemieux-like pace as Crosby recovered from a high ankle sprain, he had 14 goals and 22 assists. "I hope this is a better season," Malkin said. "I had a great summer. Im not going to change my game, but maybe have more concentration (this season)." Nobody needs to tell Bylsma what having a driven Malkin would mean to a franchise that is coming off first- and second-round playoff eliminations following its two Stanley Cup runs. "With him in our lineup, the dynamic changes dramatically for matchups, defensive pairings, power play," Bylsma said. "Were just a more dangerous team."
