TORONTO -- Trainers Roger Attfield and Josie Carroll as well as jockey Eurico Rosa da Silva will all be looking to make history in the $1-million Queens Plate. Attfield will chase a record ninth win in the 1 1/4-mile race at Woodbine Racetrack, his last coming in 2008 with Not Bourbon. His horse, Check Your Soul, is the 3-1 early favourite and will leave from the No. 13 post in the 17-horse field, the same position Not Bourbon left from in securing Attfield his record-tying eighth Plate victory. "The Queens Plate is Canadas race," Attfield said. "There are people out there who have been training and owning horses for their lifetime and havent won the race and its a dream to win it. "To go for my ninth is incredible and it would be great to break that record. It was set when I was born, I think, so its about time someone caught the old rascal." Attfield is tied with Harry Giddings Jr. for most career Plate wins by a trainer. Giddings Jr. registered his victories between 1911 (St. Bass) and 1942 (Ten to Ace) before his death 1949. Attfield, 71, has enjoyed immense racing success in Canada. Three of his horses have captured the Canadian Triple Crown (With Approval in 1989, Izvestia in 1990 and Peteski in 1993) and he has conditioned six horses of the year and eight times received the Sovereign award as the countrys top trainer. The native of England who now calls Nobleton, Ont., home is also a member of the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame. Check Your Soul is coming off a convincing 3 1/4-length win in the 1 1/8-mile Plate Trial on June 5 at Woodbine. Check Your Soul also has history working in his favour. Five of Attfields eight previous Plate Trial victors have gone on to win the Queens Plate, the last being Not Bourbon. As well, the last three Plate Trail winners -- Not Bourbon, Eye of the Leopard in 2009 and Big Red Mike in 2010 -- have gone on to win the Plate. Carroll will send two horses to the starters gate Sunday at Woodbine Racetrack, including Inglorious, the lone filly in the field. However, Inglorious was installed as the early 9-2 third choice. Carroll became the first female condition to win this event in 06 with Edenwold and a victory with Inglorious would make her the only woman to be a two-time race winner. More importantly, she will be looking to continue a trend of fillies winning the first jewel of the Canadian Triple Crown. In 1991, Dance Smartly topped the field en route to the Triple Crown. Ten years later, her daughter and Canadas champion three-year-old filly, won the Queens Plate. Dancethruthedawn is the last filly to land in the Queens Plate winners circle. Inglorious, who drew the No. 9 post for Sundays race, is coming off a three-quarter length win in the $500,000 Woodbine Oaks on June 5. Shes not only the fields leading money winner with $650,000 -- four victories over six lifetime starts -- but also perfect in four trips over Woodbines Polytrack. However, Carroll has some concerns about such a big field. "I think getting out clean and quick will be very key for the filly," she said. "If you look at this race the last five years the winner has always been placed in contention so I think she needs to break and get position three or four off the lead and track the speed. "It will depend very much on what kind of speed there is, who the pacesetter is. And I think you need a heady jockey in a 17-horse field." That shouldnt be a problem as Inglorious will be ridden by Luis Contreras, Woodbines leading jockey this year. Theres no questioning the Brazilian-born da Silvas credentials. He has won the last two Queens Plate races and is looking to become the first jockey to capture three straight victories. He earned his first crown in 09 with Eye of The Leopard, then successfully defended the title last year aboard Big Red Mike. This time around, hell be aboard Bowmans Causeway, a 6-1 early fourth choice that will go from the No. 16 post. Da Silvas win last year came before Queen Elizabeth, who was making just her fourth visit to Woodbine. She wont be there Sunday as Ontario Lieutenant-Governor David Only headlines the list of dignitaries. Veteran trainer Mark Casse will saddle three starters (Strike Oil, Enduring Star and Hippolytus) as he attempts to secure his first career Plate victory. Casse has enjoyed much success before as a three-time Sovereign Award winner as Canadas top trainer. The second leg of the Triple Crown is the $500,000 Prince of Wales Stakes on July 17 at Fort Erie, Ont. The final event is the $500,000 Breeders Stakes turf race Aug. 7 at Woodbine. The Canadians -- missing captain Ghislaine Landry as wekk as Jen Kish and Mandy Marchak to injuries -- defeated Spain 17-12 in overtime to open the day before falling 19-5 to New Zealand in the semifinals.WASHINGTON -- Washington Capitals general manager George McPhee says he absolutely did think he was done assembling the major parts of his team for next season. Then he heard from a veteran goaltender who was feeling kind of bummed out. Tomas Vokoun found there wasnt as much demand for his services as he was expecting, despite his stellar NHL record. So he let the Capitals know hed be willing to forego a big contract to play for a Stanley Cup contender. He was snapped up by McPhee for a bargain -- a one-year deal worth US$1.5 million signed late Saturday. "I dont think we anticipated being this fortunate," McPhee said Sunday. "This is a heck of a move for the organization. We thought we were done a couple of days ago. ... Weve been telling other GMs and the media that we were done making offers because we thought we were." The Capitals opened free agency Friday by signing defenceman Roman Hamrlik, right wing Joel Ward and centre Jeff Halpern and trading goaltender Semyon Varlamov. McPhee then said he had the team he wanted in place and was prepared to go with youngsters Michal Neuvirth and Braden Holtby in net. Now its Vokoun and Neuvirth projected for the big league roster, with Holtby again expected to spend much of the season in the AHL. McPhee said it would be natural to expect Vokoun to be the No. 1 goalie going into training camp, but he said no such promise was made to the veteran. "Certainly his experience would putt him in that position," McPhee said.dddddddddddd "But, like anything else, they come in and they compete." Vokoun thought he would be a bigger catch on the free agent market. The two-time all-star is tied for the best save percentage (.922) in the NHL since the 2005-06 season. "Honestly I didnt have a whole lot of offers," Vokoun said. "The money side, its not great, but the opportunity is unbelievable. Obviously it was a disappointing day for me, July 1. For whatever reason, I was basically in the bad spot and Washington came in." Vokoun said the best offers came from his old team, the Florida Panthers, who proposed a two-year contract and a three-year deal. But Washington, as McPhee noted, has "become one of those destination teams" that attracts players looking to win immediately. "I never had a chance to play for a team like this," Vokoun said. "It came to me almost as a surprise." Vokoun, 34, has played for Montreal, Nashville and Florida, spending the past four seasons with the Panthers. He was 22-28-5 with a 2.55 goals-against average in 57 games last season. He also led the Czech national team to a gold medal at the 2010 world championships and has represented his county twice at the Olympics. But, as McPhee said, he still has to win the job in camp. "I didnt get any guarantees or anything like that," Vokoun said, "and I wouldnt expect it if I were signing for $5 million." cheap jerseys wholesale jerseys ' ' '
