Summary: The Lions scored a shock win over the Suns in the Q-Clash, but the same couldn’t be said for their NEAFL side who suffered a heavy defeat. The Lions will be sweating on the return of Stefan Martin after he went off with concussion, with Trent West and Archie Smith the only other recognised rucks on the list – neither of which are setting the world alight. Ben Keays again showed his ability to find the ball when under pressure, and looks ready should the Lions need him.

Summary: Carlton showed a bit of fight in the second half against the Bulldogs on Saturday, but their lack of strength in the forward 50 was again made painfully evident. The performance of the Northern Blues was certainly a positive then, with Liam Jones, Daniel Gorringe and Kristian Jaksch combing for ten goals. Jones’ effectiveness at AFL level  has been much maligned since his move from the Dogs, but he must be closing in on a senior recall, while Jaksch is certainly improving since switching from defence.

Summary: The Magpies are in a world of trouble at the moment after they slumped to a big defeat at the hands of Melbourne. Their lack of form makes for a very interesting encounter in next week’s Anzac Day match-up against the plucky Bombers. The Pies could have further problems with forwards Ben Reid and Travis Cloke both doubtful for the clash, and defender Ben Sinclair picking up a concussion. Although not a like for like swap, Buckley may choose to blood mature age pick-up Rupert Wills who dominated against the Scorpions while picking up 34 possessions and laying nine tackles. Tim Broomhead also looks likely to find his way back in the seniors with 30 possessions of his own.

Summary: It’s all of a sudden not looking too bad at Windy Hill. The senior side put the frighteners up a lacklustre Geelong, and the VFL side absolutely demolished the Roosters. Jackson Merrett responded to his omission from the seniors with a fine two goal, 21 disposal game; and veteran Ryan Crowley also starred with 24 disposals and two goals of his own. Perhaps the most impressive, however, was the three goal performance by Shaun McKernan, who played predominantly forward. He could offer something for the seniors in attack.

Summary: The Cats were certainly less than impressive in their win over the patched up Dons on Saturday. Chris Scott acknowledged that there was plenty of work to be done, but didn’t suggest there was any lack of confidence in any of his best 22. That being said, George Horlin-Smith looked good gathering his 28 possessions in the VFL, and could be pressing for a call up to the senior side.

Summary: The Suns were shocked in the Q-Clash by a determined Brisbane, and fell to their first defeat of the year. To compound the misery, key defender Steven May is set to have an extended break due to a high challenge that left Lions ruck Stefan Martin out cold. With Rory Thompson injured, Henry Schade looms as a direct replacement after some solid outings.  The Suns could, however, opt to switch Sam Day into the backline and provide Jarrad Grant with his debut, after the ex-Bulldog was unstoppable with seven goals.

Summary: With Tomlinson and Steele back in the seniors, it was left to Sam Reid and Jacob Hopper to rack up the stats in the Giants’ reserves. After a record breaking performance by the senior side against Port Adelaide, changes would be highly unlikely, but it is only a matter of time before Hopper gets a taste of AFL football. The first round draft pick excelled again with two goals, 38 disposals and eight inside 50s.

Summary: The Hawks were seriously rattled in Launceston and were lucky to escape with the victory over the Saints, and they are set to be tested again when they come up against the impressive Crows. They finished the game in Tassie with no injury or suspension worries, so changes would be unlikely, however, the continued form of Dallas Willsmore is sure to keep him in the selection discussion. The young forward was immense in for Box Hill with 28 disposals (23 by foot), and showed elite kicking skills on a very blustery day. Tassie ball-magnet Kieran Lovell showed he’s not too shabby in front of the sticks either booting five goals.

Summary: As the excitement builds for the Demons after their big win over Collingwood, it continues to build at the lower level too after another accomplished performance by young gun Christian Petracca. The number two pick again looked a cut above VFL level gathering 29 possessions and a goal in only his second game in 18 months. With Melbourne flying, however, Paul Roos can afford to be patient with the young star and my give him more time. The performance of the day came from a resurgent Dean Terlich. The attacking half-back was immense on his way to 36 touches, and showed the kind of form that saw him average 20 disposals in 20 games at AFL level in 2013.

Summary: The unbeaten Roos are sitting pretty at the top of the AFL Ladder, and with a clean bill of health, they will be looking to continue unchanged when they travel to the Gold Coast in Round 5. Majak Daw continues his impressive development, finishing in the Tigers’ best with 13 touches and 40 hit-outs, while Aaron Black and Sam Durdin combined for seven goals in solid outings. Aaron Mullett and Lachie Hansen did enough to warrant a potential recall, but they may have to wait.

Summary: Things are looking grim for the Tigers after a pummeling by the Eagles left them with an uninspiring 1-3 start to the year. Richmond have a tantalising tie against the confident Demons on Sunday, in what now looks like a must-win game. You can pencil in Anthony Miles for a recall, after the midfielder reacted to his AFL omission in fine style. Miles gathered up 31 touches and laid 11 tackles finishing comfortably as one of Richmond’s best. An injury to Shaun Hampson could mark the return of Ivan Maric, while David Astbury’s rolled ankle could open the door for Jake Batchelor or Nathan Broad to return to the Tigers’ backline.

Summary: The Swans lost a thriller in Adelaide, and face another tough task when they host the Eagles next weekend; and with no injury or suspension worries, it is unlikely John Longmire will make any changes to the side. George Hewett was serviceable in the midfield after his omission from the seniors, and Jack Hiscox booted a career-high five goals. It was Aliir Aliir and Zak Jones, however, that were the ones most likely to push for selection. Both had impressive games attacking from half-back, and look ready to step up if they are required

Summary: The Eagles cruised to a win over the Tigers on Friday, set up by a dominant first half display that restricted Richmond to just eight inside 50s. As such, tactical changes to the best 22 would be highly unlikely when the Eagles travel to face Sydney next week. One certain change will be the loss of Scott Lycett, who is set to miss next weeks game against Sydney for striking Ty Vickery. Ruckman Jon Giles impressed for the Royals with three goals and could be an easy replacement if they decide to roll with two rucks.

Summary: The Dogs scored a somewhat routine win over Carlton on Saturday night, but were dealt a massive blow on the injury front after losing in-form half-back Jason Johannisen for at least two months to a hamstring tear.  The Dogs are confident they can provide cover during his absence, with Lukas Webb emerging as a likely candidate. The half-back/winger gathered 20 disposals and pitched in with a goal, and it could be enough to get him a senior call. Young prospect Bailey Williams could also find himself with an opportunity. The South Australian can play of half-back and is improving week on week, weighing in with 13 disposals and six tackles on the weekend. Williams caught the eye last year after gathering a record 56 disposals in one game for the Glenelg Under-18 side.
