Like the expert league, the Footy Prophet Fan League can trace its roots all the way back to 2013. In order to gain a place in the league, twitter followers would have to reply first and correctly to a series of AFL and fantasy footy trivia questions tweeted by the Footy Prophet handle. Once the league was filled, a date was set… here are the results:

What the Coaches Said:
Vams – Upside (Pick 1)
Early in the draft I took best player available. Combining Rocky, Lewis and Steele provided a solid foundation to build the rest of my team around. From there I sought to take the value, Deledio and Harley in subsequent picks was not planned, but these guys could be in the top 3 scoring forwards this year and I couldnt let that go, despite neither being available for round 1. defense is currently filled with guys taken at pick 200 and later (Howe, Savage, Mzungu etc) and thus carries some risk. Guys like Murphy (pick 100), Gibbs (121), M.Crouch (160) will be good scorers who slid and will increase in value this season. My Team’s chances this year will be dependent on if I can eek out some close wins early in the season whilst I have my injured guys sitting on the pine (Deledio, Bennell, Beams, Shiels) and if my late round picks can break out as I’m hoping for (De Goey, M.Crouch, Z.Smith, Howe).

This was actually the first time I’ve drafted for 27 rounds so it didn’t go how I’m used to, but overall I’m happy with my team. Getting the likes of Swan and Robbie Gray in the third and fourth wasn’t bad, especially if they can find their way into the forward line later in the season. I went into the draft planning to thin out the ruck options by taking a few dual positions, with the likes of Stefan Martin, Blicavs, Sinclair, McKernan and Vardy. I obviously expect to make a few deals if needed. The Vikings have played a major part in history – they will rise again.

Patrick – Cricky’s Crazies (Pick 3)
The strategy was team balance, so getting the best available in each line was important early. Pendles at 3 was a no brainer, and I was extremely happy to find Jacobs still there at 18. The backs had not been touched until the third round, so Shaw was swiftly brought in at 23. Roo was my first forward at 43, and it was quickly obvious how short the good options were for the forward line at that stage.
My backline ended up pretty solid in the end with Shaw, Enright and Gibson all 80 plus scorers, plus Rich and Seedsman who can hopefully push 75. The mids are a little light on big guns but I’m hoping O’Meara can return ASAP. The forwards are fairly solid as well with Stevie J and Stringer who I’m hoping can go 90+.

David – Boyder Patrol (Pick 4)
Boyder Patrol HQ came out of the pre-draft ranking exercise with some key takeaways:
Defence and midfield runs deeper than first thought; forwards do not.
Identifying some potential positional changes could help expose some fantasy gold
With this in mind, it made the most sense from a strategy perspective to focus on nailing down more experienced premiums across the board through the early rounds, then place priority on filling the forward line before anyone else. I then moved on to pick up some of the perceived sliders, and players ripe for a position change during the season. Finally I revisied the remainder of the defender/midfielder pools to pick up some hidden, more speculative talent.

Tim – Sounds of Silence (Pick 5)
I am reasonably happy with the team I drafted, thought there was more value defenders in later picks so I took high forwards and midfielders first. I was never sure how much time I had left to make my selections – the clock was dodgy and was auto drafted Liam Picken. Lucky it was quite a late pick so no harm done. A lot of the players I had my eye on went just before my selection, which always seems to happen. I was happy that Sloane was available at 56, Zaharakis slid all the way to me at pick 125, as well as Cooney. If he stays healthy, he might be a good late pick up for me at 216. Jack Viney went early… as did Elliott and Dale Thomas.

Overall I think I have a drafted a fairly solid and well-rounded team. I’ve put a lot of faith in some old heads – my backline especially, but I’m backing them to go around for one more. Lobbe at 173 was a big slider. With Ryder out there’s the slim chance we can see him return to his monstrous 2014 best. The trigger for C/F’s was pulled with Barlow at 11, I jumped on Montagna at 14, which saw Robinson, Greene, Dahlhaus, Zorko and Bennell inside 40. Motlop slid to 66, with Bell, Hall and Sam Gray all going before him which I found surprising given the freedom Motlop is going to be allowed this year. I bit the bullet and did what everyone else wanted to do but was too scared of the ribbing that would follow and drafted Daisy in the 20th round.

Ant (Footy Prophet) – Upper Echelon (Pick 8)
My strategy was simple – draft well, win the league and claim my place in the Expert League among my Footy Prophet counterparts. Taking Goddard with my first pick was contentious, but as the best defender available, he allowed me to wait until quite late to fill my defence entirely. I stockpiled on forwards early and swopped on Jarryd Roughead in the 16th round. Overall, my list looks strong enough to challenge, but I’m just stoked to finally nab Jack Steele in a league.

Conor – Mohr Than A Feeling (Pick 9)
I’ve got high hopes for Tommy Mitchell this year, so I was rapt to get him at nine, and getting Danger on the way back was the start of my midfield. My next few picks were about spreading the love so, Kolodjashnij, Gawn, and Bell gave me some reliability across the board. Both ends are a bit shaky but I feel my midfield will see me get some wins. I was really happy to get Callan Ward at 52 and Kieran Jack at 89 and, given Gold Coasts injury woes, I think that my bargain of the draft was Rischitelli in the 21st round. Around the league Armitage slipping to 46 was the steal of the draft whilst Deledio, Bennell, Beams and Shiels all going to the same team was the stuff of nightmares.

Todd – Garrick Obama (Pick 10)
Drafting on the mobile while cooking for two screaming kids was never going to be a dream, but at least it wasn’t a nightmare. Went with a different strategy to my usual one and built a solid midfield with JPK, Ellis Adams, Redden and Parker. Was happy to pinch Masten in the 21st, went early on Kerridge in the 11th, but think it will pay off. Main regret is not holding out longer for a ruck. Kruezer in the 10th may haunt my dreams.
