2014-09-03

Monday’s transfer deadline came and went with the Premier League breaking numerous records from money spent!

Manchester United themselves spent over £150million, bringing in the likes of Angel Di Maria and Radamel Falcao.

The champions Manchester City had a relatively quiet window, with many claiming the winners of the summer spending was Chelsea, who added Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas.

All 20 clubs brought in at least five players and here is a look at the best piece of business by every club during the summer window.

Arsenal - Alexis Sanchez from Barcelona

Arsenal beat off competition from Liverpool and Juventus to the signing of the Barcelona forward Alexis Sanchez.

Sanchez enjoyed his best season at the Nou Camp last term, however it wasn’t enough to keep him at the club, with Luis Suarez replacing him at the La Liga giants.

Barcelona’s loss is very much Arsenal’s gain and Sanchez has already scored two goals for the club and he could prove to be one of the signings of the summer.

Whether he is deployed from a wide role or through the middle, Sanchez will cause English defences problems this term and Arsene Wenger will be hoping he can fire them to the title.

Arsenal fans would have liked to have seen Wenger add another defender and a defensive midfielder, with the club light in that position.

Aston Villa - Keeping Ron Vlaar and Christian Benteke

Not many predicted before the 2014 World Cup that Ron Vlaar would be one of the players of the tournament, however his level of performance was excellent through out.

Vlaar marshalled the likes of Lionel Messi and Gonzalo Higuain brilliantly in Holland’s semi-final with Argentina and despite a penalty shoot-0ut miss, the Villa defender was voted man of the match.

Arsenal and Southampton had real interest in Vlaar, however Paul Lambert insisted he was never for sale.

His partnership with Philippe Senderos has started well, with Villa conceding just once this Premier League term already.

Keeping a hold of the injured forward Christian Benteke is also a huge plus, with Tottenham linked with a move.

Burnley - Keeping Danny Ings

Sean Dyche did amazingly to guide Burnley to the Premier League and hasn’t received the biggest of budgets.

Burnley have added experience in Matt Taylor and Steven Reid, although their best piece of business may have been to keep Danny Ings.

Ings scored the goals that helped fire Burnley to promotion and Liverpool were heavily linked with a move for the latter.

The England under-21 international hasn’t made the best of starts to life in the top flight, however Ings has real talent and his future is surely in the top flight, regardless of how Burnley do this campaign.

Chelsea - Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa from Barcelona and Atletico Madrid respectively

Fabregas and Costa have made brilliant starts to their Chelsea careers

Chelsea missed out on the Premier League title last season due to the fact they lacked a world-class creative midfielder and centre forward.

Jose Mourinho has certainly addressed that this term by adding two of the very best in the business.

Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa have made the perfect start to life at Stamford Bridge with the Blues the early Premier League leaders.

Costa has four goals in three league games, whilst Fabregas has the same amount of assists in that period.

Selling David Luiz and Romelu Lukaku for a combined £78million was also a brilliant piece of business by Mourinho!

Crystal Palace - James McArthur from Wigan

Crystal Palace broke their transfer record to bring the highly talented midfielder James McArthur to Selhurst Park.

McArthur ticks all the boxes of a modern day midfielder and a return to the Premier League was always on the cards for the former Wigan man.

Palace’s midfield trio of McArthur, Joe Ledley and club captain Mile Jedinak is one of the strongest down the bottom half of the table as the club look to beat the drop.

Re-signing Wilfried Zaha on loan could be an excellent deal, although letting Glenn Murray go to Reading has frustrated some Palace fans.

Everton - Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea

Another club to smash their club transfer record this summer is Everton, when they brought Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea.

Lukaku cost Everton £28million on the back on an excellent season on loan at Goodison Park last term.

Loved by manager Roberto Martinez, the Spaniard will be confident of bringing the best out of Lukaku, despite his failure to score so far this term.

Signing Gareth Barry on a free transfer is another good piece of business, although Everton fans would have liked another centre back through the doors.

Hull City - Their deadline day swoops

Hull City certainly enjoyed the best transfer deadline day of all the Premier League clubs.

Their big four signings will all improve the team and they broke their transfer record on the Uruguay forward Abel Hernandez from Palermo.

Steve Bruce also added Mohammed Diame and Gaston Ramirez, although the loan signing of Hatem Ben Arfa is the one that has the fans excited.

Ben Arfa is up there with the best in the league on his day and after falling out with Alan Pardew at Newcastle was looking for first team football.

Selling Shane Long for £12million is also a good piece of business, whilst adding proven Premier League quality in Michael Dawson and Jake Livermore.

Leicester City - Leonardo Ulloa from Brighton

Nigel Pearson was desperate to sign a striker to bolster his ranks in the summer window and bid for numerous forwards.

David McGoldrick was subject to interest, however the move for Leonardo Ulloa was more successful and he has started well at the club.

Goals in home matches against both Everton and Arsenal is an excellent start for Ulloa as he looks to score the goals to keep Leicester up.

Esteban Cambiasso joined on a free transfer, with Pearson signing four from Manchester United in Jack Barmby, Louis Rowley, Nick Powell and Tom Lawrence.

Liverpool - Dejan Lovren from Southampton

Liverpool’s defence cost them the Premier League title last season, with the Reds conceding 50 goals (23 more than third placed Chelsea).

Dejan Lovren from Southampton was Brendan Rodgers’s number one target and Liverpool got their man for £20million.

His partnership in the heart of Liverpool’s defence with Martin Skrtel could see them become title challengers again this term.

Selling Luis Suarez to Barcelona was always, unfortunately from a Liverpool fans point of view, on the cards, although they sold the striker for £75million.

Mario Balotelli has arrived, along with Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert, Lazar Markovic and Alberto Moreno.

Manchester City - Extending deals of numerous first team players

Manchester City had a relatively quiet transfer window by their usual standards, although they spent £32million on Eliaquim Mangala from FC Porto.

Thier best pieces of business in the window was to tie many of their best players down to long-term contracts.

Sergio Aguero, Vincent Kompany, David Silva, Samir Nasri and Edin Dzeko all extended their City contracts this summer.

Aguero and Silva were linked with returns to Spain, so managing to convince them to stay has delighted the fans at the Etihad.

Fernando has also arrived from Porto, although they have let Alvaro Negredo join Valencia.

Manchester United - Angel Di Maria from Real Madrid

Manchester United spent over £150million in their attempt to get back into the Premier League top four.

The club smashed the British transfer record to bring Angel Di Maria to Old Trafford, signing him for £59million from Real Madrid.

Di Maria is exactly the player United need, even if Old Trafford wasn’t his number one destination this summer!

Many were surprised Real Madrid allowed Di Maria to leave, especially after his excellent form towards the back end of the 2013/14 campaign.

Louis Van Gaal has also signed Luke Shaw, Marcos Rojo, Ander Herrera, Daley Blind and an amazing deadline day swoop for Radamel Falcao.

United let numerous players leave including the likes of Nani, Shinji Kagawa, Patrice Evra and Danny Welbeck to rivals Arsenal.

Newcastle United - Remy Cabella from Montpellier

Remy Cabella was Newcastle United’s most expensive signing of the summer and there is a reason for it.

Cabella is technically superb and Alan Pardew will be hopeful that he can replace Hatem Ben Arfa, who was loaned to Hull City.

Newcastle had been heavily linked with Cabella for a few seasons before finally completing his signature.

Fans weren’t happy with the clubs deadline day that saw Ben Arfa and Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa move on, with no striker added.

Newcastle did spend big for the first transfer window in a few years though, signing nine new faces, including Siem De Jong and the Dutch full-back Daryl Janmaat.

Queens Park Rangers - Sandro from Tottenham

Unsurprisingly Harry Redknapp was busy on transfer deadline day and was re-united with two former faces.

Queens Park Rangers signed Niko Kranjcar, however the addition of Brazilian midfielder Sandro from Spurs is their signing of the summer.

Sandro was out of favour at Tottenham under Tim Sherwood and new manager Mauricio Pochettino, although he will become a popular player at QPR.

QPR enjoyed an excellent transfer window, adding the likes of Steven Caulker, Rio Ferdinand, Mauricio Isla and Leroy Fer.

Losing Loic Remy was a blow, even if it was inevitable, however Adel Taarabt remains at Loftus Road!

Southampton - £91million for Luke Shaw, Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren and Calum Chambers

It was all panic at the St. Mary’s stadium early in August with numerous players leaving and little sign of the money being re-invested.

Ronald Koeman managed to get an amazing £91million for the quarter of Luke Shaw, Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren and Calum Chambers!

Southampton arguably re-couped £30million more than the four players are worth and Koeman has since added well, with the club making a solid start to the season.

The deadline day arrivals of Toby Alderweireld and Saido Mane are excellent additions and will improve a side looking for another top 10 Premier League finish.

Stoke City - Mame Biram Diouf from Hannover

Mark Hughes managed to get the majority of his transfers in early in the summer window.

Steve Sidwell, Phil Bardsley and Mame Biram Diouf all arrived on free transfers which are excellent pieces of business from Stoke.

Diouf is the centre forward Hughes had targeted for some time and after two games without a goal he scored a superb solo winner against Manchester City last weekend.

Bojan Krkic has also arrived from Barcelona, however he has been on the bench for the last two Premier League matches.

No players left that Hughes will be overly annoyed about, with Cameron Jerome joining relegated Norwich City.

Sunderland - Ricky Alvarez from Inter

Sunderland tried and failed to make Fabio Borini’s loan move a permanent one and he remains at Liverpool.

Gus Poyet did have a good first summer transfer window as Sunderland manager though and brought in eight players, without spending a huge amount.

Ricky Alvarez’s loan from Serie A side Inter is quite the coup and the Argentine international could make a real impact during his year long loan.

Signing Jack Rodwell is also a good piece of business, with Poyet also re-united with the former Brighton winger Will Buckley.

Swansea - Keeping Wilfried Bony

Wilfried Bony’s £20million release clause wasn’t activated by any side and the Ivorian will remain a Swansea player this season.

No player scored more Premier League goals in 2014 than Bony and he also scored twice at the World Cup for Ivory Coast.

Bony is the perfect modern day forward and has strength, power and a can finish with both head and feet and it is a surprise the likes of Arsenal and Tottenham didn’t make a move.

Garry Monk’s men have made an excellent start to the season, winning all three matches and will be looking for a top half finish.

The club offloaded numerous players that were Michael Laudrup signings in Michu, Pablo Hernandez and Chico Flores.

Tottenham Hotspur - Keeping Christian Eriksen, Jan Vertonghen and Hugo Lloris

Spurs had a much quieter transfer window this summer in comparison to 12 months ago, even making a profit!

The likes of Christian Eriksen, Jan Vertonghen and Hugo Lloris have all remained at the club, despite reported interest from Europe’s elite sides.

The trio are genuinely world-class and if they can perform well this term, Spurs have a genuine chance of returning to the Champions League.

Federico Fazio has arrived from Sevilla for just £8million, whilst the likes of Lewis Holtby, Sandro and Michael Dawson have been offloaded.

West Brom - Silvestre Varela from FC Porto

Silvestre Varela’s loan move to West Brom is one of the more surprising deals of the summer.

The winger was included in Portugal’s World Cup squad and has done well for both club and country in the past 24 months.

West Brom have signed a winger that has an eye for goal and will improve the side should he be able to remain fit this term.

Ideye Brown looked good on his debut against Southampton and the club will need him to score goals if they are to stay away from a relegation fight.

West Ham - Alex Song from Barcelona

West Ham managed to convince Alex Song to join on a season long loan deal, despite reported interest from Galatasaray and Napoli.

Song had a Premier League preference, with the likes of Liverpool and Manchester United preferring to look elsewhere despite his proven ability.

Song is likely to partner another new signing in Cheikhou Kouyate in central midfield and he has made an impressive start to life at Upton Park.

Aaron Cresswell was one of the best players in the Championship last term, whilst Mauro Zarate can be world-class on his day.
