Our school HCDHS is located in a remote Aboriginal Community in the East Kimberley of Western Australia. It is country to the Gija and Jaru Indigenous people of this area. We had 27 HCDHS students partaking in the event under 18 and three adults—30 participants total.
Since I am the Food Technology teacher at HCDHS, I thought it was a great idea to get involved in this record attempt event. My students love to cook and they love Jamie Oliver as well. I asked what my students thought about this event and if they wanted to get involved…AND the feedback was overwhelming, very positive and motivating. They were thrilled because they watch Jamie’s cooking shows on TV as well.
The 30 participants were involved in the lesson on Friday 16th May 2014 in the Home Ec/Food Technology room located at HCDHS. The students were put into groups of six, and despite only having two graters per group, they were all very patient about taking turns to create the delicious RAINBOW SALAD WRAP! The students followed the lesson, recipe and all instructions- they were so dedicated to making the wrap properly! They also did an amazing job cleaning up afterwards! The students really enjoyed the wrap and even took some left overs home to share with their families. Most of all, my students really enjoyed themselves and had a truly fun time.
I am so excited and proud we were able to partake in such a motivating and enjoyable event. Teaching is about “GETTING KIDS TO WANT TO LEARN” and when you partake in fun lessons like this record attempt lesson–students are very engaged and plus having a good time… it makes teaching/learning so easy and stress free.
I am very blessed to work with these amazing and unique students here in the East Kimberley. In this type of very small community kids need to look forward to something….they need to get excited about something and this event did just that for our students here! SO I THANK YOU!!
Lots of peace, love and joy from down under in the Kimberley!!
