Barot: This is a fascinating place where flows the River Uhl, and there is a wildlife sanctuary as well, known as the Nargu Wildlife Sanctuary. This was the source of hydel power generation when the British people used to rule India. The quietness of the place along with the rambling of the water makes this a perfect place for holiday if one wants to relax without much crowd. One can also go for mountain hiking to Bara Bhangal and also have a visit to the Parashar Lake and Palampur.
Bijli Mahadev Temple: If you are en route to Kullu valley and have plans for visiting Kasol, then do not miss this beautiful place called Bijli Mahedev Temple. Almost 12 kilometers away from Kullu, there is a village called Chansari from where you can reach this heavenly abode through stairs. One can also trek to the top through a road from Naggar or can hire a jeep to reach there. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is located at a height of 2480 meters and one can also arrange a night stay by camp at the premise of the temple.
Chansal Pass: If trekking is your thing, then Chansal Pass is the perfect travel destination for you. Located at a height of 4600 meters above sea level, this place did not have a road even a few years back. This place has a breathtaking view of mountains and a clear sky and there is heavy snowfall which leads this place to be a perfect spot for skiing.
Pulbahal and Monalag: These are two very small villages which are located just a couple of kilometers away from Shimla under the shadows of the tallest mountain of the Shivalik range known as the Choordhar mountain. This peak has a height of 3400 meters and the villages under the shadows are beautiful with green apple orchards and lush green conifer forests. If one can set up a camp there, they can have an ecstatic view of the starry night which is unforgettable.
Kharapathar: This also lies 80 kilometers away from Shimla and there is a tall egg shaped rock in the middle of the place and hence the name. One can go for a mountain hike for seven kilometers to the top of Giri Ganga, which is the source of the Giri River and can also go for a trek to the top of the Kuppar peak.
One can easily book train tickets online for the nearest stations to these places, and it is also easy to get food in train if they have a pantry car.
