On November 1st, I wrote about the importance of Thinking Small in November and shopping through local businesses and Direct Sellers to have a greater impact in your own community.

All month long, I will be spotlighting Direct Sellers and the impact that their businesses have on the community. I hope it will inspire you to Shop Direct.

Today, I want you to meet Connie Kelly. Connie is a Wellness Advocate with doTerra and has been in business for about six months, although she’s been using the products for over 2 years. When I asked Connie what drew her to her company (or Direct Sales in general), she said,

I love these products, love what they have done for me and my family in terms of our health and well-being.  To extend that into the lives of my friends and family was very appealing to me.  So I started to think, “Hey!  Why not make a little extra money on the side??”  It is snow-balling into a team that is growing by leaps and bounds!  And it’s such an easy business to boot.  I love these products, I share them with friends/family, they love these products, we all benefit.

And speaking of family, like many people in our industry, Connie is a busy person, balancing her life between her doTerra business, her career as an elementary school teacher, and her family which includes her husband of 15 years, Don, their 11 year-old son, Donnie, a 9 year-old daughter, Katie, 2 dogs, Gus and Cody, their cat named Molly, and a bunch of fish. PHEW!It can definitely be a juggling act to run your own home based business, but Connie has found that working her business has had both tangible and intangible positive impact on her and her family.

I asked what she thought the biggest impact was to them so far, and she replied:

Well the first benefit to my family is that we have been able to rely on essential oils to help us fight off anything from the common cold, headaches, and allergies to combating environmental factors like bugs (mosquitoes).  That alone is worth it!  But the extra money certainly doesn’t hurt.  We are working on becoming debt-free, and that freedom is a driving force for me.

Most people select a Direct Sales company because they are passionate about the products, and this really shines through with Connie! When you see a business that impacts your family’s health and financial standing, it’s hard not to jump right in

As with any business, the income a Direct Salesperson earns in any company will vary from person to person. Connie is excited about not only what she can earn through her sales, but also by helping others become involved with the company. She shared the following with me about their compensation plan:

.

With doTERRA you can make money from selling the products at the retail price.  But the company is structured so that you earn commission from your down-line use and sales as well.  And then they offer certain bonuses when your down-line is producing at a certain volume.  So for instance, if I’m doing about $100 worth of business in a month, and three of my down-line members are all at $100 in a month, you get a $50 bonus.  When each of those people have three people under them doing about $100 worth of business in a month, you get a $250 bonus.  And it grows from there.  Well, I can buy $100 worth of products for my own personal consumption every month myself!  So you can see how that can add up pretty quickly!  Also, the company pays you back in points every month depending on how much you order.  You can redeem those points in toward free products.  It’s a pretty awesome company!

.

So, how does Connie’s home business have a greater effect on her community? She is proud to say that her daughter dances at a locally owned dance studio, and her son is involved in Boy Scouts. They also shop at local grocers, and Connie tithes a portion of her doTerra earnings. She also happily has home parties to support other women who have their own businesses, too.

.

Connie knows that choosing how you shop and who you shop with is important. She said,

.

Shopping small, direct, and local means you’re impacting your community by adding to its economic growth, all from the convenience of your own home.

Just imagine how all of that money earned and spent keeps a community strong. Connie and her family are using her business earnings to shop locally and they are involved in local activities and clubs. They also donate to charitable funds. Then, THOSE business owners can use that money to turn around and shop locally, too. Also, the organizations and charities do even more go by providing programs, outreach, and services for others in the area. The ripple effect just grows, and grows, and grows!

.

Can you see what’s happening here? More money is staying in the local community all because people decide to shop with Connie!

.

A few last thoughts from Connie about her business:

.

The doTERRA company itself has set up farming coops with farmers in third-world countries which impacts those entire communities.  They have a foundation called The Healing Hands foundation, which helps the communities around the world where these coops are to build schools, set up water stations, and ensures that growers are paid year round.  This all leads to the best oils on the market.  And the doTERRA company pays the administrative costs for this foundation 100%.  So by buying these products in our own homes, we’re helping a community a world away.  http://doterrablog.com/doterra-healing-hands-foundation/.
