Eating local in the summer is easy. Farmers markets are open nearly every day of the week, and are chock-full of just-picked produce.

But here in the Lower Hudson Valley, the frigid winter months are a different story, and eating local can be tricky.

“Think roots,” says Guy Jones of Blooming Hill Farm in Blooming Grove, which comes to the Palisades Indoor Market on Saturdays.

Beets, turnips, carrots, potatoes and radishes. That — along with winter greens, breads and pastries, as well as meat, fish and poultry — is what you’ll find a lot of at the indoor farmers markets. So think robust stew and crispy herb roasted vegetables. Eating local in the winter is starting to sound like a piece of cake.
