The 24-hour news cycle has officially made its way to magazines.

While breaking news has long been a critical part of the content mix for a lot of titles, lifestyle magazines have had the luxury of standing apart to a degree. Mobile and social have muddied the waters, but traditionally, their jobs have been to react, not report.

Hearst Magazines Digital Media is formally tearing down that wall though, naming Michael Sebastian senior news editor. He’ll manage a 24-hour shared news desk connected to each of the company’s 18 magazine sites. Sebastian had been reporting on media for Advertising Age since 2013.

“Michael is a sharp reporter with deep experience and an understanding of our brands and the kind of news that resonates with our audience,” Kate Lewis, vice president and editorial director of HMDM, says in a statement. “ He is as comfortable writing as he is managing and editing, and he will be a strong and steady leader for this team as we build out our newsroom.”
