The first section of this article is dedicated to all the techies out there who wanted to update their Acer and ended up with a video driver error. It will discuss what happened and why it happened. If you are not a techie and just want to get right down to the solution, skip the first section.

Upgrading Acer Aspire from Windows 7 32 bit to 64 bit

Many people mistakenly believe they can upgrade their Acer Aspire from Windows 7 32 bit to the 64 bit with no problem. They think since the computer has no problem running the 32 bit a simple switch of the heat sync and the processor will mean upgraded graphics.

Unfortunately, this is not the case. When you replace the 32 with the 64 bit, it will work about 25% of the time. The other 75% of the time you will get the dreaded Blue Screen of Death along with a stop error. It will read something along the lines of “STOP: 0x00000116 error caused by atikmdag.sys.”

The Error is With the Video Card

You can try to call tech support for help but it won’t do you much good. The problem is with the integrated video card. The video card just does not support the 64 bit system. Therefore, you can change drivers and update drivers all you want but it won’t help much.

What you will have to do is replace the video card with one that is capable of running the 64 bit or change back to the 32 bit.

Is 64 Bit Better than 32 Bit?

From a purely techie standpoint, the answer is yes. The 64 bit does give better graphics and better quality than the 32 bit.

From the average Joe standpoint, the answer is not really. The average Joe will not be able to see a difference unless it is run side by side. Additionally, some products will not run on Windows 7 64 bit, while they will run on Windows 7 32 bit. Therefore, the average computer user may want to stick with the 32 bit for now.

Upgrading the Video Drivers

If you went the route of purchasing a new video card, then it should have came with a driver installation CD. You can use this CD to install the video drivers. It should be as simple as placing the CD into the CD drive. If it is not, then instructions should be written on the CD sleeve or in the manual.

Upgrading the Windows 7 Drivers

Upgrading the drivers for Windows 7 is a little more difficult. Since there are so many components, it is recommended to use driver update software. The software will scan your computer looking for outdated and corrupt drivers. Then it will present a list of drivers in need of upgrading. At this point, you are given the option to download and install whichever drivers you choose.

Since the scanning, downloading and installing is done automatically, upgrading all the drivers on your Windows 7 will take just a few minutes. At this point, all the components of your computer should be running perfectly.
