Catching in the Cold

When the tide slacked we fished a few bridge pilings with no luck. The Little Jetties must have been our 10th spot. As soon as the tide started coming back in we started getting bites. I love low tide fishing. It just seems more natural to me.

After few more shots it was my turn. We switched places at the helm and I moved us into a small cove and while I was explaining the bottom contour I tossed an 1/8th ounce jig head and a live shrimp. 1 flick and it was off. A nice fish.

Got to take advantage of the good weather today and chased some reds. Caught them on just about everything we threw at them. Paddle tails, jerk baits, flies, anything, They were hungry! Probably caught 10 or more fish today. All sight fished outta skinny water.

Got about 15 keepers between 2 to 4 pounds before I hooked this big gal which had some wide shoulders but didn’t appear to have roe yet. She tipped a tad over 7 pounds on the boga grip. A MirrOlure Paul Brown floating by a dock piling was just too much for her to resist.

Inlet Drum Recon

If these guys are here, any day now we should start seeing waves of large fully mature fish coming through. Just as i had hoped. We managed to pick up 4 solid Drum and my second largest Bull Red at 44 inches. Pretty sweet for this time of year. We got a few other odd balls, including a 13 inch Sea Bass.

Sheepshead and More

Launched for the last few hours of the outgoing after realizing nobody had fiddlers, but that didn’t stop us from hunting down some sheep. First cast produced a trout and we got into a good 12 inch sea bass bite before Joey gets blown up! but it wasn’t no sheep! His Personal best redfish and he was stoked. Not 5 minutes later he hooked into the target species, also his personal best.

Redfish Chewing in The Northeast

I moved into an area I had a lot of luck in around may and june but hadn’t caught any there for awhile. It’s a large shallow mud flat that sometimes holds some real finicky fish. After an hour or so of fishing I finally got a bite. It ended up being a 25 incher. After that it was nonstop for an hour, fish after fish after fish, by the time the sun started to set behind the trees I caught 11 reds and released 9 of them and kept my limit, a 25 and a 26 incher.

Pre-Front Blitz

Since we were only able to find a bite in one spot the day before, we went ahead and hit the same area first. The reds were chewing immediately! I got one on my second cast. Mike got one a few minutes later. Some time after that I managed a rat red and it wasn’t long before we had to make a move. We staked up in another area and immediately found the porgies chewing! We put about 15 or so in the boat and took off to beat some bad weather back in.

Randomly checked out a “fishy looking” spot and found a nice drop off. Threw some dead shrimp out at the start of the outgoing and the bite was on. Ran out of shrimp and time and headed in. New Personal best for black drum. Long cold day but ended up worth it.

Took my cousin out on Monday to attempt getting him on his first salt water fish. He immediately hooked up into a solid 7 pound sheepshead, He was stoked. Unfortunately, he was projectile vomiting the rest of the morning and it wasn’t long before we had to call it a day.

Catching Convicts

Dropped the boat in by Nassau Bridge and got our first lines in the water around noon. We stayed close to the inlet, fishing a few bridge and dock pilings. The bite was scattered, but steady. Picked up a couple of fish at each of our stops. Wrapped it up around 4pm with a total of 7 fish to 18 inches. No studs, but made for a few decent bags of fillets.

I set up with 4 rods and had my first of many pomps before I could get the last rod out! It looked like a good sign but I didn’t have a clue as to how great of a day fishing it was going to be. Whiting from 11 inches to 15 inches in size were hungry and shrimp was the bait of choice. The pompano preferred sand fleas. This time of year the fleas are very large and one will be perfect for a pomp or a redfish if he finds it first.

Grass Flats Flounder

Today, me and Jimmy saw right away that we had a similar tide situation and just like the day before, it was cooler out. this time a bit colder. We decided to cut straight for shallow mud bottom. We found a fishy looking Spartina Grass line and staked out. Second cast and I have a nice Flounder. A few casts later and I have a bigger one, our best for the day at around 3.5-4 pounds. Jimmy switches over to a Spinner and proceeds to kicking my butt. It was nice being the man making it happen but this guy wouldn’t let me have my moment for very long. It Wasn’t long before he’s slaying the Flounder. By the end of the day our scores were Jimmy 6, Steve 4.

Flounder Bite Producing in the Northeast

The Flatties were more than willing to chew on Berkley Gulp Shrimp in Pearl White with Chartreuse tails, tipped on Slayer 3/0 Jig heads in 1/4 ounce. Steve had some success on Stinky Finger Shrimp on the same Jig heads. He started off using Red jig heads and had no luck at all. Once he switched over to the Slayers, it was instantly game on. Chartreuse was the color of choice.

Northeast Jetty Bulls

My next door neighbors and I have been fishing together on my boat all summer and have had a lot of fun catching bull reds. We went out Monday night to the Jetties and later back into the ICW south of the little jetties and had a lot of success again on the bulls. We were using blue crabs and mullet on the out going tide. When one, using a mullet, she ran for a piling. The anchor had to be pulled, lines brought in and the boat moved to open water away from the obstructions.I hooked up on this big After the lines were retrieved, Tony cranked the boat and Amy pulled the anchor. Tony positioned the boat and Amy netted the fish. Good teamwork.

“Hooked for Life”- First Bull Reds

Took a very good friend and business partner and his 14 yr. old son out today in search of big reds. The boys been bugging me since last yr. to put him on his first bull red. so today was the day and we headed out early to the beach to secure some pogies. I had fresh crab but wanted the ol’ reliable just in case. Had to throw a few times south of the poles but we got a well full. As we were heading back in the jetties we got to see a tarpon show along the south rocks. There were fish skying on mullet all along the rocks and they couldn’t believe it. It was tempting but we were on a mission so up river we headed and anchored up at the parking lot for the second halve of the outgoing. It was an awesome bite this morning from 9 am on…non-stop action. Let’s just say the boy popped his bull red cherry about ten times today and was crying uncle by 1pm. He is now officially “hooked for life”!

Big Bulls off the Little Jetties

My wife decided she was ready to head out to the river so we decided to make it a group activity and invite some old friends that we haven’t fished with in a while. Hit the beach first for some Pogies and they were thick today. One cast and we had more live bait than we were ever gonna need. Hit the jetties North rocks for a bit and found a few Lady Fish(which was convenient) and a nice Drum which we invited home for dinner. The tide finally made its outbound run and we gave it another 30 minutes in the Inlet just to buy time for a favorable tide up river. We pulled up anchor and headed to the Little Jetties first. Got anchored up and immediately doubled up. Our friend Tammy got big boy in the boat and the other fish came unglued. A few minutes later and my wife has her first Bull of the season hooked up! I don’t think she cared much for the Bait caster rods but she made due and landed a hoss nonetheless! Minutes later Timmy gets his and before we know it, we have a guy anchored up right on top of us.

Bulls on Parade

Hit a few other areas up and down the beach starting from the Red Tops back all the way to Atlantic Beach and Found that the entire beach was just too Shark infested. No sign of Tarpon today. We made the decision to go ahead with our Plan B. Headed back in and anchored up river for some Channel Donkeys! We got set up and things were pretty slow. At first we were using Live Pogies and cut Jack. Decided to change up our bait and got some Chunked up Blue Crab put out and instantaneous action followed. For the next 45 minutes or so Crab was the only bait they would eat. We doubled up twice. The action was just none stop. Before too long the down going tide started slowing down and the Crab stopped getting hit.

Northeast Spawning Reds

Went out today around 3 o’clock and went for some bull reds. Started off messing with some jacks but then got bored so headed to the red grounds and anchored up. Started the day with no bait but saw some crabs swimming and netted them and also cast netted some mullet. Threw a mullet out on the only rod that was already rigged up and before we could finish rigging another rod we where hooked up. Pulled in the fish and it was just around 40 inches. Next three another mullet out and rod starts bouncing. My friend picked up the rod and started reeling slowly to get a firm hookset. Once the fish felt the pressure it took off peeling line for almost a minute. Finally gained a few inches then it turned around and started running again after. After watching the rod for a few minutes we had a feeling it wasn’t a redfish. Noticed no head shakes and fast bounces on the rod every now and then.

Little Jetties : Reds & Snapper

Hit the Sisters creek boat ramp about 7am and went straight to the Little Jetties. Got a 2 man limit on mangrove snappers and this 30-inch red. All caught on live shrimp.I also caught a ladyfish for bait. Cut it up and caught a big bluefish for my neighbor. I didn’t get to eat the redfish and didn’t want to eat the bluefish, but I got a tiny bag of snapper.

Hot Bull Red Bite

First off, I have to shout out a huge thanks to Morocco_madness! He gave me a handful of priceless advice on here! My dad and his friend are from Jupiter, FL and do not have many reds down there and they have never caught any this big. I took them out Saturday and man were they biting! I had some frozen pogies and dropped those down towards the bottom and within 15 minutes we caught the first fish of 44 inches! Lost a couple and caught more. biggest was 45 inches and over 30 pounds.

Been working on some research and development working on some new areas. Haven’t been all that productive… Found a few areas for Flounder season that look like they could be epic. Well, today i decided to work on more of the “tried and true” and put him on some better fish. We started off in the inlet and found that seas were way up. Turned around and fished a rock cluster that held quality fish for me many years ago. Still fished the Jetties just much further West. The North rocks on the tail end of the up going produced some absolute monster Sea Bass. We got 6 keepers and released at least 20 at 12 inches.

Northeast Variety

As I continue to learn the inshore waters of NE Florida, I decided to bring out the big guns and hire a little professional help. A good friend recommended Jeffrey Crabtree of Right Spot Charters and after a little back and forth we decided that yesterday morning looked as good as any. Thankfully (for me) Jeffrey’s boat was on the mend which meant we got to fish from mine.
We worked the last couple hours of the outgoing tide starting at first light. Threw a variety of artificials and had a pretty good morning catching Redfish to 29 inch, Trout, Flounder and lady fish. Highlight for me was this 25 inch Red that ate a Gulp Shrimp.

Super Moon Inshore

We hit Oak Harbour at 6am and it was bright as day before the sun even started to come up with the huge moon….pretty cool to see! The high tide didn’t flood as much as expected, but it was high enough to get into the backs of a few of my favorite creeks. We started with top water and Boathouse was dead…only one rat wanted to eat. Moved into Chicopit only to find more of the same, some small flounder but that was about it. Fished several high tide flats to no avail. Moved to the Little Jetty as the tide topped out and had fun with a big school of keeper sized grey snapper, although we tossed them all back. A few sea bass, jacks, yellow mouth was all we could find until Joey got a very nice surprise using a mud minnow on a fishfinder rig….

Geting By with a Little Help

The pressure was on. My good friend Josh’s 10 year old son Aiden had never caught a fish before! We needed to fix this asap, so I was tapping any info possible. First I went to an old faithful back creek spot. The tide was wrong, but I figured it would be a good spot to let them warm up their casting skills. Lo and behold, a red decided to cooperate and bit Aiden’s bait and the fight was on! It was a solid fish, about 25 inches!
It was only about 8a.m., and the gnats were biting so we decided to go for a boat ride. I had reached out to Arun and he told me about a redfish creek spot holding some big uns! So we went there not having a clue how to fish the spot, etc.

ICW Trout and Flounder

Fished the ICW for a few hours this afternoon.Caught 3 keeper trout (26.75, 17, and 16 inches), 1 short trout, a jack and a flounder (15 inches). Kept the small slot trout/flounder for dinner and let the big one go to catch another day. This is my personal best trout and I have to say that large trout (22 inches plus) make my day! Reds are fun to catch, but large trout are special to me.

Headed out to the Mayport south jetties after lunch today on the falling tide. The east wind with the outgoing tide had the water rolling in the channel but was not too bad on the south side of the rocks. Cast around for some trout, but the blues were there instead hitting everything I threw at them. Even caught a 13″ spanish mackerel, the first one I’ve seen this year. Guess the spring migration has started. No trout, so I moved into the river and looked for some sheepshead. The whiteshell rocks had lots of little sheepshead that successfully stole every fiddler I put in the water.

Jetty Monsters

I’m getting married two weeks from today and my soon-to-be wife and I needed a break so we loaded up with blue crabs and hit the Mayport ramp. B+M was slow and the ramp was dead…..it was perfect.High tide was 12:30 and we dropped the hook around 10:30 and didn’t catch more than some dirty ‘ol toadfish for the first couple hours. But after the tide turned, the inlet laid down and the fish started cooperating. All fish took 1/2 blue crabs (live) on circle hooks. All fish were caught right in the lip and all swam away healthy after a little TLC.

Herding the Sheeps

Day three of our sheep herding marathon. Gotta love Increasing daylight after work. Bob, myself and Scott (Sea Snake’s neighbor) fished from 3.30 to 5.30 pm and got on to some nice sheeps. Boated 10 fish from 3 pounds to 9 pounds. Most were over 7 pounds. In three days of short fishing trips in a combined 6 hours of fishing, we caught some big black drum and boated 20 stud sheeps. Our fishing for the week is done and might go again next week for a couple of trips. After the sheeps, I’ll be switching gears to pompano in the surf and topwater trout in the creeks!

Mayport Inlet Drum Roll

Today we went with brined clams, fresh shrimp and live blue crabs. The real producers were the blue crab and shrimp. Right away the Sonar is pinging like mad. All morning long there were large quantities of fish under the boat. Didn’t take them long to find our baits either. Right away we are loading up on perfect sized drum and large Sea Bass. The average size on the sea bass that we kept was 15 inches. All nice fish. The drum were on fire. One after another. Once the tide slowed down a bit the bite calmed down right along with it. For whatever reason the current picked right back up again and the minute it did, the fish turned back on. That’s when my whole live blue gets owned and sends my rod bending. I start reeling and it’s on! 10 minutes later a large bull red is in the boat[...]

Nassau Sound Mixed Bag

Braved the wind and fished Nassau sound with my brother Jon. Plan was to fish under the bridge for sheeps but the wind was horrible, ended up fishing some docks that we normally wade in the summer and found em biting…ended up with 7 sheepies I’m guessing 3-7 pounds, 3 reds at 16-28 inches, and 2 blk drum at 14 & 17 inches, all on fiddlers! Bought two dozen live shrimp as a backup plan and brought home 22 of them.

Was catching a bunch of yellow mouth and croaker in the river on dead shrimp when this guy showed up to party! Kind of funny I got this guy on dead shrimp because I was fishing the tip of the jetties on Friday with blue crabs and couldn’t find a big drum to save my life. Very fun fight on the light tackle I was using. First good fish I have caught on my new boat, hope to add many more!

St.Augustine Gator Trout

I caught this big slob on a topwater in the St. Augustine intercostal from shore. I limited out after also catching and releasing another big 24-incher. The rest were all in the 18-19 inch range. After all year of catching 14 1/4 inch fish, I’m pumped to finally stack em up! She was a 29 1/4 inch, 9 pound ,16 inch girth pig! I think its a fish of a lifetime but we will just have to wait and see! I went back the next day and caught a 24 1/4 inch the same hole.

More Stud Sheeps

Went out to scout for some tourney quality sheeps. Our trip to Nassasu was a bust three weeks ago so we didn’t even bother with the sheeps until yesterday. We fished end of sisters creek and worked the structure all the way to Nassau sound. We found the big ones in the deepest part of the bridge. Yesterday was the day we lost more sheeps than we caught. Everytime a monster sheep was lost my heart sank! Ended the day with about 6 of ‘em all from 7 to 8 pounds and a couple of keeper sea bass. The fish were caught on fiddlers.

My neighbor Bruce and his little ones went for a quick trip yesterday afternoon! Finishing the last of Dads live shrimp, Ashley hooked into a monster sheepshead! She was so excited, I heard the story three times while getting the camera ready. They also caught a bunch of whiting and trout. Cold Front Gator Trout

Snuck out of work early today to catch the front coming through. Conditions were close to perfect as I as loading up my kayak. Wind was still, temps were cooling and it wasn’t raining! Tied on one of my favorite lures, the spook jr. in the bone color. Saw some mullet get freaked out near a deep channel and slung the plug 6 feet past the spooked mullet and worked it back without pausing. It got hammered but then just turned over on it. So I gave it one more shot and slowed the presentation, pausing every third pop. All of a sudden this fat 26 incher just about swallowed the plug. Glad to see some big trout still hitting topwater!!! Other than the usual dink trout I caught two reds!! Great afternoon sure beats working in the O.R.[...]

Big Seas, Cold, and Raining Sideways

Had a chance to get out and attempt some catching today. Met up with forum member Javier AKA Optimum7 at B&M this morning. Loaded up on Fiddlers along with various essentials and made our way to the boat launch. I noticed that we had a 40% chance of rain today but being the guy that has zero faith in weather prediction, i went along with our plan anyways. Got just shy of the base and we were greeted by big rollers and strong easterly wind. Things started looking awful right off the bat. We changed our course and headed for the Little Jetties. Not sure why but the Sheepshead were just not biting. We sat it out for a good hour or so and it appeared that the rough weather in the Inlet may have subsided. Gate Station Red

Hit the beach around 7:30 a.m. The bite started a little slow but picked up later in the morning. I put a bunch of whiting and a nice size bluefish in the cooler. I even caught a whiting on a finger mullet. That was a first. The catch of the day was on a small piece of shrimp with a clam fish bite and a #2 hook on a drop down rig. The red hit and surfaced as soon as it was hooked. I thought it was a big shark at first. I was lucky there was a guy fishing right down the beach that came down and helped me land the fish and get a good picture for me. The fish was released right after the picture was taken. An old friend called me up last night wanting to know if i wanted to take him fishing. Needless to say we went! Fun day for sure. Started off as it often does when fishing Vilano Inlet, SLOW. We hit our first area in search of some more of those Delicious Permit. None around today. Found a good stock of Whiting in their stead. Wore them out for a little while and dragged up the anchor to try out a couple other areas. Different spots with more of the same thing. No worthwhile fish being caught. Started getting tired of working sandbars so i took us over to the Inlet to work the rocks. This is about the point where things started looking up. Right away im pulling up decent sized Ring Tails. Lost far more than i caught but did at least put 4 in the boat, along with a 4lb sheepshead[...]

Inshore Slammin’ After Dusk

Launched the boat at dusk and caught a red and then headed south to gig some flounder and to scoop up a few stone crabs. Then we finished the night with some dock light trout. We had much success, the big flounder is 7 pounds, and we probably caught and released 20 trout, but kept 3. Good eating for the next week or so!

“Who said Redfish are picky eaters? This large one we got ate the shark rig! 10/0 circle, 480 lb cable, and the bigger half of a 10″ Whiting. The rest of the morning we went threw 3 dozen colossal clams which you get 3 baits from each one. We left them biting at 11AM. In the cooler 10 Pompano, 12 Whiting, 2 Blues, and a 5lb Sheepshead. We through back 10 Whiting, 6 Pompano, a 3′ Blacktip Shark, and a 23 lb Redfish.[...]”

Flat Fish Report

Went scouting for flounder with my partner Bob this Saturday. It was a slow day for quality “flatties”. We threw everything except the kitchen sink and tried so many spots that looked fishy. Kept some real nice ones. Many 12 inches to 14 inches, went back to the drink. Spoke to a commercial flounder gig fisherman and he said they are not schooled up in large numbers yet in the usual areas. We will go for them again soon.

Since last night was so hot, we decided to try again. Man, it was nonstop action all afternoon. We hooked 12 to 15 tarpon, landed 7. Mostly juvenile 4 to 8 pounds. Windy Day for Bull Reds

Got out Saturday morning early with some friends to try and sneak a couple hours in before the winds picked up. The big reds were chewing good for the conditions. Maybe the falling barometer helped, who knows, but by 9:30 the wind was howling and the river got pretty snotty. Got off the water by noon and there was a 3 foot wind chop in Clapboard Creek by the ramp!

I’ve been on vacation this week. My camping trip at little talbot last weekend got rained out so no beach fishing. I made it out Tuesday to fish the rocks at Vilano. We didn’t catch much but we saw some tarpon airing it out against the rocks but we couldn’t get em’ to eat. I took my daughter fishing Thursday to west Chicopit. Its hard to find the fish with a 6 year old in the boat. We saw a big school of dolphin with some babies jumping out of the water.
