Welcome to Florence Inferno, your one-stop shop for information on events happening in Florence, with an events guide providing information on music, art, cinema, markets, and many other things occuring in the city.

This week we make special mention of Festa della Rificolona, or the Paper Lantern Festival, on September 7, one of the Florentines’ favourite nights of the year! According to Christian tradition, the Virgin Mary was born on September 8. It was once a popular tradition, with hundreds of farmers from the countryside flocking to the city to celebrate it. They used to carry lanterns to make the “pilgrimage” at night and arrive in the city in the early hours of the morning.

Even today, on September 7, the tradition is still respected, and the streets come alive with colored lights, creating a magical atmosphere.

We also make special mention of Music Markets, a festival that stages musical performances, all free to attend, at the historic markets of Florence, namely, Loggia del Porcellino, Loggia di Piazza dei Ciompi, San Lorenzo, and Sant’Ambrogio Markets. On Saturday, September 5, at Loggia di Piazza De’ Ciompi, Le Vie en Rose, and on Saturday, September 12, at Sant’Ambrogio Market, The Voice, a tribute to Frank Sinatra. Starting at 9.30 p.m.

The festival takes place every year on the evening of September 7th, the eve of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. It is a popular tradition whereby long ago, farmers from surrounding areas would make the long trek into the city to sell their goods. Rificolona is in fact the Italian term for a woman with a poor sense of style and is the origin of the name of the festival.
