At Florence Inferno, we provide you with the names of events occurring in Florence, and an events guide with information on music, art, cinema, markets, and many other exciting things going on in the city. In this post, we provide you with information on events happening in September 2016.

This week we make special mention of the Festa della Rificolona, or the Paper Lantern Festival, happening on September 7, one of the Florentines’ favourite nights of the year! According to Christian tradition, the Virgin Mary was born on September 8. It was once a popular tradition, with hundreds of farmers from the countryside flocking to the city to celebrate it. They used to carry lanterns to make the “pilgrimage” at night and arrive in the city in the early hours of the morning.

Even today, the tradition is still respected on September 7, and the streets come alive with colored lights, creating a magical atmosphere.

We also make special mention of Music Markets, a festival that stages musical performances, all free to attend, at the historic markets of Florence, namely, Loggia del Porcellino, Loggia di Piazza dei Ciompi, San Lorenzo, and Sant’Ambrogio Markets.
