This week we make special mention of the Festa della Rificolona, or the Paper Lantern Festival, happening on September 7, one of the Florentines’ favourite nights of the year! According to Christian tradition, the Virgin Mary was born on September 8. It was once a popular tradition, with hundreds of farmers from the countryside flocking to the city to celebrate it. They used to carry lanterns to make the “pilgrimage” at night and arrive in the city in the early hours of the morning.
Even today, the tradition is still respected on September 7, and the streets come alive with colored lights, creating a magical atmosphere.
We also make special mention of Music Markets, a festival that stages musical performances, all free to attend, at the historic markets of Florence, namely, Loggia del Porcellino, Loggia di Piazza dei Ciompi, San Lorenzo, and Sant’Ambrogio Markets.

Sunset on the Tower of San Niccolò. There was a time when the San Niccolò tower was used to defend this district from that of the Arno. Today, it offers an incredible view of Florence. [Outside Florence] Un Altro Parco in Città in Pistoia. The historic center of Pistoia will be filled with a green blanket of grass, turning it into a park in the heart of the town. An initiative developed by a group of young architects in collaboration with the main bars, restaurants, and pubs. Festa della Rificolona (Paper lantern Festival) – Free procession from Piazza Santa Felicita to Piazza SS. Annunziata, passing through Piazza della Signoria. The festival takes place every year on the evening of September 7, the eve of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. It is a popular tradition whereby long ago, farmers from surrounding areas would make the long trek into the city to sell their goods. Rificolona is the Italian term for a woman with a poor sense of style and is the origin of the name of the festival. Farmers would come with lanterns and candles, protected by a cloth frame, which remains a symbol of the Festa della Rificolona. Starting at 8 p.m.

Santa Maria Novella Station: 80 Years. New permanent photography exhibition at Santa Maria Novella train station. The exhibit was curated by the Fondazione Giovanni Michelucci, named after the station’s head architect. Spiritual Guards by Jan Fabre in Piazza della Signoria, Palazzo Vecchio, and Forte Belvedere. The show will feature bronze sculptures, wax works, Fabre’s signature beetle shell compositions, and films of his theatrical performances, all dating between 1978 and 2016. Matilde Di Canossa: A Woman Who Changed the Course of History at Casa Buonarroti. The exhibition is dedicated entirely to the figure of Matilda of Tuscany or of Canossa, the powerful and well-respected countess who spent 14 years of her life in Florence. Matilda is known for the famous episode of her alliance with Pope Gregory VII as he was imposing obedience on the emperor Henry IV.
