The SNL sketch this weekend — in which Aziz Ansari gets interrogated by two rough cops for having critiqued La La Land on a date — was a good precursor to the Oscars announcements this morning. The film this morning earned 14 Oscar Nominations — as many as Titanic and All About Eve, the other two that’ve made the record-achieving historical tie for most nominations ever. Praise for the film (which — sorry for adding more — I also happened to love) is ubiquitous, though there has been some honestly refreshing pushback recently, and now the Oscars seems to be an overarching love-fest for the dreamy, technicolor love-fest.
Following that are Moonlight and Arrival, each nominated in eight categories — no surprise for the former, but after something of a Golden Globes snub, it felt uncertain that the exquisite, thoughtful and unostentatious sci-fi drama would go as recognized here. Manchester By the Sea, Lion and Hacksaw Ridge all earned nominations in six categories; Fences and Hell or High Water earned four; and Hidden Figures was recognized in three, while Loving, Elle, and Jackie — all of which could’ve easily been contenders in other categories — each only earned nominations for their leads, Ruth Negga, Isabelle Huppert, and Natalie Portman, respectively.
