The fourth annual Sun King CANvitational will feature canned beer from 65 breweries, and you have a chance to win a pair of free tickets from Hop Notes.
The Midwest’s largest canned craft beer festival will take place from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10 on the west block of Georgia Street and Pan Am Plaza, downtown Indianapolis. All participating breweries will be offering beer samples and patrons can also enjoy local food trucks and live music, all in an urban downtown atmosphere.

Why an event celebrating cans? Since craft beer’s inception in the 1980s, bottles have been most commonly associated with craft beer. However, over the last decade many of the breweries featured at the CANvitational have led a revival of craft canning and helped change the way people view cans. Cans keep out light and oxygen (two elements that can destroy great craft beer), they are more sustainable than bottles and the whole surface of cans can be decorated with label art.
This year’s participating breweries were invited by Sun King because of the quality of craft beer they are producing and, as the name of the event suggests, their love of canning beer.
“We have invited our friends from across the country who share our passion for crafting world class beers and we are excited to showcase what they do and why we choose to can,” Sun King Co-Founder Clay Robinson said. “The most exciting part is that the majority of the beers available at the CANvitational aren’t even available in Indiana, which gives us the opportunity to provide a truly unique experience.”
This year’s CANvitational will showcase breweries from all over the country in addition to Beavertown Brewery from the United Kingdom.

Other breweries, including Against the Grain, Brewery Vivant, and Two Brothers, also followed suit after CANvitational.
Drew Fox with 18th St. Brewery joined Sun King to brew this year’s CANlabortation, Eighteenth Sun (8.7% ABV, IBUs 64). It is an imperial wheat IPA which is one of the signature beer styles pioneered by Three Floyds Brewing Co., Indiana’s oldest brewery.
Eighteenth Sun was brewed in celebration of Indiana’s bicentennial year as well as the CANvitational. It is brewed using Cascade, crystal, and Mosaic hops which, according to the brewery, creates a “bold, citrusy flavor with Indiana wheat for body and balance.”
