Please prepare one of the following: 1) a brief comedic monologue; 2) a brief musical theatre song; or 3) A one-minute monologue and 16 bars of a musical theatre song. Bring sheet music in the correct key; an accompanist will be provided.

[MAX PRINCE] Male, 40s-50s. A larger-than-life comic actor; the star of “The Max Prince Show,” a hugely popular television variety show. Based on Sid Caesar and “Your Show of Shows.” Cannot help but dominate a room entirely.
[LUCAS BRICKMAN] Male, 20s-30s. The newest writer on the staff, sensible and sincere.
[MILT FIELDS] Male, 30s-40s. The flamboyant “gag” man who deals in fast-paced patter. A joke-a-minute wholesaler.
[VAL SLOTSKY] Male, 40s. A senior writer and the most politically aware. A Russian immigrant with a strong accent.
[BRIAN DOYLE] Male, 30s-40s. Irish-American, with a biting sense of humor and bitter outlook on life. Smokes, drinks, and coughs a lot.
[KENNY FRANKS] Male, 30s. The most sophisticated writer on the staff. Considered the “boy genius.”
[IRA STONE] Male, 30s-40s. A hypochondriac. He comes in late every day with a new ailment.
[CAROL WYMAN] Female, 30s. The only female writer on the show; has a strong and quick defense mechanism.
[HELEN] Female, 20s-early 30s. Max’s secretary. Attractive in a quirky way and completely out of her element amongst the writers.

[EL GALLO (THE NARRATOR/BANDIT)] Male, 30s-50s. A charismatic and ruggedly handsome actor with rakish sex appeal. Warm, inviting, and cordial to the audience but has his darker moments. The narrator of the show. Baritone.
[MATT (THE BOY)] Male, to play early 20s. An innocent young man searching for love and adventure. Bright, but naïve and foolish at times. Strong actor and singer. Baritone.
[LUISA (THE GIRL)] Female, to play early 20s or younger. The young and pretty daughter of a button-maker. A romantic idealist who falls in love with Matt. Soprano with chest voice.
[HUCKLEBEE (THE BOY’S FATHER)] Male, 40s-50s. An ex-Navy chief; a bit sloppy and boisterous. He fakes a fight with Bellomy in hopes of getting their children to fall in love. Should be a strong character actor. Baritenor.
[BELLOMY (THE GIRL’S FATHER)] Male, 40s-50s. A button-maker. Fastidious and tidy. Should be a strong character actor. Baritenor.
[HENRY (THE OLD ACTOR)] Male, 50s-70s. An aging thespian who specializes in reciting Shakespeare. An excellent character actor with strong stage presence. The stage is his world and he knows no other reality. Non-singing role.
[MORTIMER (THE MAN WHO DIES)] Male, 30s-50s. Henry’s goofy sidekick; a former actor who specializes in stage deaths. He lives in the same world as Henry.
[THE MUTE] Male or female, 20s-50s. A speechless presence who watches, acts as the wall between Luisa and Matt, and deals with props. An “invisible” stage assistant. Should be able to help tell the story or fade into the background unnoticed. Pantomime role. Must play violin/fiddle.

[MASHA] Female, 40s-50s. A glamorous and successful actress who goes gallivanting around the world. Competitive and insecure.
[SPIKE] Male, 18-30. An aspiring actor and Masha’s new boy toy. Sexy and self-absorbed.
[NINA] Female, 18-30. A lovely, sincere would-be actress visiting her aunt and uncle. Energetic and star-struck.
[CASSANDRA] Female, any age. A cleaning lady and soothsayer with a quick, biting wit.

[CATHERINE HIATT] Female, 20s-30s. An struggling Irish-Catholic actress from a hard-luck shore town in eastern Virginia. Smart but insecure; fiercely loyal and ardently committed but distrustful of her talent and beauty. Excellent actress with a strong pop/rock belt.

[HENRY HIGGINS] Male, 30s-50s. Upper-class; a professional bachelor and world-famous phonetics expert. Overbearing and aloof but vulnerable on the inside.
[ALFRED DOOLITTLE] Male, 40s-60s. Eliza’s working-class father. A great talker and speechmaker; lively and charismatic. Strong Cockney accent. Should move well.
[COLONEL PICKERING] Male, 50s-70s. A retired British officer and renowned author. A British gentleman with impeccable manners.
[MRS. PEARCE] Female, 50s-60s. Higgins’ housekeeper. Stern and strong with a heart of gold.
[MRS. HIGGINS] Female, 60s-70s. Higgins’ mother; the only woman who can put him in his place. Witty, charming, and impeccably mannered.
[FREDDY EYNSFORD-HILL] Male, 20s-30s. Upper-class young man who becomes smitten with Eliza. Handsome and charming but boyish and impetuous. Strong tenor.
[MALE AND FEMALE SINGERS] Excellent male and female singers to play featured roles, Cockneys, servants, and sophisticated members of the upper-class. All ages and vocal types.

[BERTHA] (Role is cast) Female, late 30s-50s. An efficient, gruff, sarcastic French housekeeper, quickly losing her grip on the household.
[ROBERT] (Role is cast) Male, 30s-40s. Bernard’s old school chum and good friend. Fresh from the farm; innocent, naïve, and wide-eyed, the total opposite of Bernard. He turns out to be extremely resourceful. Very strong comedic actor.
[GLORIA] Female, 20s-30s. The American fiancée. Strong, beautiful, extremely self-confident. A combination of all-American homespun good spirits and the sexually liberated woman of the ‘60s.
[GABRIELLA] Female, 20s-30s. The Italian fiancée. Sensual, fiery, passionate, and aggressive, able to go from sex kitten to tigress at a moment’s notice.
[GRETCHEN] Female, 20s-30s. The German fiancée. A Teutonic bombshell. Extremely authoritative and easily angered but very passionate and emotional.

[CHRISTOPHER SCOTT] Male, 20s-30s. A young, tormented American GI who falls in love with Kim, but after they are separated finds solace in his new love for Ellen back in the US. After three years of trying to get past his Vietnam experience, news of a son born of Kim shakes his world apart. Strong pop tenor.
[KIM] Female, to play 17. A young Vietnamese girl who moves to Saigon and falls in love with Chris. She is young and naïve but strong-willed. Will do anything for the good of her son, Tam. Strong mezzo/belter.
[THE ENGINEER] Male, 30s-50s. The half-French, half-Vietnamese owner of the Dreamland Club in Saigon. A greasy, charismatic wheeler-dealer who puts self-preservation above all else. High baritone.
[JOHN] Male, 20s-30s. Chris’ close friend and fellow Marine. Passionate and full of life. After the war, he locates Chris’ son Tam, living with Kim in Bangkok. Pop tenor.
[THUY] Male, 20s-30s. Kim’s cousin, to whom she has been promised since she was 13. A stalwart and determined Vietnamese military leader who will stop at nothing to get Kim back for himself. Pop tenor.
[ELLEN] Female, 20s-30s. The sensible, stable American woman Chris marries after returning from Vietnam. Determined to do what is best for her husband and her marriage. Mezzo/belter.
[GIGI] Female, 20s-30s. A Vietnamese bar girl with a dream of being taken away by a Marine to start a new life in America. Strong mezzo/belter.
[MALE AND FEMALE SINGERS] Excellent male and female singers with broad vocal ranges to play featured and ensemble roles. All types and ages.

[MARCUS LYCUS] Male, 30s-60s. A charming local businessman who peddles courtesans. Baritone.
[MALE AND FEMALE ENSEMBLE] 20s-30s, to play multiple roles in the ensemble including PROTEANS (three physical comedians) and COURTESANS (strong dancers, beautiful and nubile). All vocal types.
