In the summer of 1928, Willy Michel (August 20, 1905 – March 1, 1976) began starring in a series of photo booth portraits that would continue for 20 years. Michel, a protege of Henri Martinie’s agency, asked the great and good of French society to join him inside the photomaton booth installed at his No. 26 Boulevard des Italiens, Paris, photography studio.
The resulting photos are joyous. Willy, who sat slightly behind his guests, only ever showed the camera one shoulder as he smiled with an infectious enthusiasm. He was focused on the writer, dancer, actor and artist sat so close to him. At some point the camera would capture the guest giving Willy a quizzical side-eye, as if they were half expecting and maybe hoping something untoward would occur in the confined space. There is always laughter. Wily’s wit and his guest’s gaze conspire. The camera clicks. And something cheeky, fun and unique slides from the machine.
