Sometimes I get nostalgic thinking about high school, but never about acne. When I was a teenager, imperfect skin was a nasty reality that I couldn’t shake. When I found myself in the halls of Degrassi Jr. High to discover Clear Start by Dermalogica – a new skincare line that targets youthful blemishes – that uncomfortable feeling of having troublesome skin came rushing back.

I think part of the problem with teenage acne is that it feels inevitable, unable to be cured. Acne skincare advertisements rarely speak of causes and focus mainly on surface-level solutions, some of which lead to dehydrated, sensitive skin and a continuance of acne. With Clear Start, Dermalogica is breaching the teen acne topic with relatable dialogue and a new skincare line designed to feel approachable to teens.

Clear Start is the Cady Heron to the Regina Jones, if you will (Mean Girls shoutout!). The line consists of nine over-the-counter products with formulations designed to reduce bacteria and control oil without dehydrating the skin – some ingredients included are moroccan Argan kernel extract, saw palmetto, sulfur and cross-linked hyaluronic acid with gently exfoliating salicylic acid.

Dermalogica’s Clear Start will be available over-the-counter starting April 2014 at select spas, skin care centres and online. The launch consists of nine individually sold items as well as a convenient five piece kit for $40.
